I knew our dinner plans were going to be screwed over when Mac called me from the office. It was my night off at the crime lab, the one Mac was in charge of, and he was hoping to get out early enough that we could catch a nice dinner and maybe get a little action. We had both been working hard on the cases we had caught recently.

"Hey, sweetie. Guess dinner is going to have to wait again?" I asked. This was the second attempt at dinner recently, but with work getting in the way, it wasn't possible.

"I'm sorry about that. I'll try to be out by 9, you could always pick something up," he said, defeated.

I sighed. "Mac, this is the second time this week I've gotten a call from you asking to reschedule. I think you work too hard."

"I know, but I want to close these cases." He sounded frustrated.

I thought for a minute, and then said, "you know what, I have an idea. I'll be over at the lab in an hour, ok? Make sure you have an appetite, please."

"Alright. I'll be waiting," he replied, "love you."

"Love you too, Mac Taylor," I teased.

I called the restaurant we both enjoyed going to for a nice meal and ordered what he almost always got, a Cobb salad appetizer (which we normally shared), the lobster mac and cheese, and the chicken Marsala for me. I packed up some of the mini apple pies I had made earlier to surprise him, walked over to the restaurant and got the food, then took a cab over to the lab.

Walking to his office, I let one of the officers on the floor know that I was looking for him and was waiting in his office. He nodded and went to look for the former Marine turned police detective.

He walked in as I was setting up the food. "Cat," he murmured, pulling me into one of his warm hugs. We kissed quickly, and I smiled at him.

"Hey, Mac. I brought dinner," I said, pleased as a rare smile played on his lips when he saw what I had. Sitting down on the couch, I draped my legs across his lap and grabbed the salad. He chuckled as I handed him a fork. "Dig in, Detective."

He planted a kiss on my forehead with a smile and we started eating.

When we finished eating around 6:45, Mac went to find Stella he was heading out for the night. He got back to his office just as I finished cleaning up our impromptu dinner. "Let's go, my love," he said, offering me his arm. I gladly slipped my hand into his forearm and smiled.

Getting back to the apartment, our clothes left in a trail to the bedroom.
