Mac and I were laying in bed, him passed out from a long day of work at the lab. I was on maternity leave, so I didn't have much to do besides stay home with Gypsy and watch tv.
I had felt a little off all day, and my Gypsy could tell. She had followed me around all day, resting her head on my leg, or looking at my belly. I took it as a sign that labor was coming, and it was keeping me up.
With the corgi laying next to me, partially on the body pillow I was religiously using to keep the back aches at bay, I felt an odd sensation.
It went away after a few seconds, so I wasn't concerned.
Gypsy looked up at me though, ears alert.
"What?" I asked her in a whisper, not wanting to wake up the sleeping man next to me.
We held eye contact until she put her head back down and closed her eyes, stretching with a sigh. Gypsy amused me.
Ignoring the sensation, I tried falling asleep, to no avail.
An hour and a half later, it was getting stronger but still spread out the same, and it dawned on me. Contractions.
"Hey, babe, I think I'm going into labor," I said softly, nudging Mac awake.
"What? Are you sure?" He asked, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes.
"No, I just woke you up for shits and giggles, Mac," I told him. "Gypsy's been following me around like a shadow today, and I'm almost 100% certain that the pressure I'm feeling is contractions."
"Do you want me to call the midwife?"
"Yes, please."
He sat up to grab his cell to call the midwife, Nala, to see what she thought we should do.
A couple minutes later, we were sitting on the couch, Gypsy resting her head on my very pregnant belly, with the TV on. Nala told us to get to the birth center when the contractions got closer together and stronger.
"This is what Gypsy's been up to for the past 24 hours. Dogs know things, Mac," I told him, running my fingers through the corgi's soft fur.
"I believe you," my husband said, grabbing my free hand. I met his grey eyes. I smiled, and got one in return. That moment just reaffirmed why I married him.

"Can I check you, Cat?" Nala asked.
I was sitting on a birthing ball, leaning over Mac's legs. He was rubbing my shoulders and upper back.
"Yeah, help me up, babe," I sighed, groaning through a contraction. Mac helped me up and lay down.
Nala checked my cervix, and the baby's heartbeat. "You're 9 centimeters, totally effaced. Baby girl sounds good. I'll be back to check in with you in a bit, or when you start to feel pushy," she told me.
"Good, good. Maybe Calliope will be here soon," I said, getting back up. I had a small reprieve from the contractions, and I was going to use that to my advantage.
"I'm looking forward to meet our little one," Mac told me, stepping behind me as I grabbed my water bottle. Leaning into him, I sighed. "How do you feel?"
"Tired," I chucked wearily. "I can't wait to meet Callie. She'll be here when she's ready."

"Happy birthday, Calliope Azalea!" Nala said, helping me bring the baby up to my chest. I was sitting in the birthing pool, Mac sitting behind me.
I gladly took the baby into my arms, cooing at the crying baby. Hearing her first cries made my heart melt.
"I know, sweetie, that was tough for both of us. You're here now. I've got you, little one. Daddy's right here, too."
"Hi, Calliope, welcome to the world," Mac said softly as I shifted her so he could see her better. "She's beautiful. You did great, Cat. I'm proud of you."
I was smiling, because of my baby, and my husband. I held Callie to my skin, cradling her head and body.
Her blue eyes opened a little, staring up at me. "Yeah, I know," I cooed. "Its kinda bright on your little eyes, huh?"
"Cat, you wanna transfer over to the bed, so I can deliver the placenta?" Nala asked, kneeling next to the three of us in the pool.
"What? Oh, yeah. Sure."
I was so mesmerized by the little life in my arms that the world around me didn't matter as much.
Mac and Nala helped me up and out of the birthing pool, and as Mac went to change out of the wet clothes, I got as comfortable as possible in bed with the baby.

I was sitting in bed with the little girl in my arms and my husband next to me.
"Cat, Mac, you have some visitors," Nala told us, stepping aside. Danny, Lindsay, Flack, Hawkes, and Stella walked in with bags. Gifts.
