Twenty-Six

The pain ruptured through me, coming at me in waves.

"Justin! Get me to the hospital!" I shriek.

Justin picks me up in his arms and rushes downstairs. He carries me to the car, helping me inside. I clutch myself around my stomach. All I could think about was if the baby was okay.

"Ah! Oh my God!" I cry out.

I feel like I peed myself before another wave hit me. I scream and lean over.

"I'm trying, baby. I'm trying," Justin says, looking at me with worry.

I see the hospital in the distance and I feel a little hope rush through my veins. He pulls to a stop in front of the emergency entry. He helps me out and we rush into the hospital.

"Can someone please help us?" Justin yells.

Nurses and doctors surround us.

"Come with us," a nurse says. "How far along are you in your pregnancy?"

"Seven months," Justin answers.

I scream again and they rush my into a room. They help me onto a table and lift my shirt. They use the ultrasound gel to look at the baby.

"It's alive," a doctor says. "Get ready for delivery."

"Delivery?" I manage to say through clenched teeth.

"Your baby is ready to come out," he says. He looks at Justin. "Are you the father?"

Justin nods. "Yes, I am."

Justin takes my hand and kisses my knuckles.

"Alright," the doctor says, moving things around. "When I tell you to push, you push."

I was yelling and screaming from the pain. I was squeezing Justin's hand in a death grip.

"Push!"

I push, screaming. I could feel the baby moving.

"Push!"

I push again and throw my head back with another scream. Justin was standing there the whole time with his hand in mine.

"One more, Rosalie," the doctor shouts over my screams. "One more push."

I clench my teeth and push hard. All I could hear were my screams until all the pain just dimmed greatly and there was a high pitched cry. I sigh and lean back.

"Congratulations," the doctor says. "It's a baby boy."

He holds up the baby wrapped in a blue blanket. The baby was crying, the hands gripping at the air. He hands it off to a nurse who walks out of the room with it. Justin smiles at me and I smile back. The doctor fixes me up and I am wheeled out of the delivery room. I was so tired. I was just wheeled into a patient room when I pass out.

I wake up to see Justin sitting beside me, holding my hand. He smiles at me when he notices me awake.

"Hey," he says softly.

"Hey," I reply, smiling at him.

"How are you feeling?" he asks.

"Tired."

Justin laughs and nods.

"I would think so."

"Where's the baby?" I ask, looking around.

"In the nursery," he answers. "I didn't want to bring him in. I wanted you to see him first."

I feel tears burn in my lower lids when the door opens. The doctor walks in with a clipboard in his hands. I sit up and look at him. He smiles at us.
