Chapter Fifteen - Complications

It was 8:20 when Athena walked in.

Megan knew it was rude but she put her headphones in and turned up the music.

Ignoring Athena and soon ignoring Tommy, he had walked in just behind Athena.

Athena got the hint pretty soon and mouthed 'talk later' to Megan before focusing on the conversation she was having with Sam.

It took Tommy a little longer to figure out she didn't want to talk which made it so much harder to ignore him.

Luckily Megan was saved by Mr Leoman.

"Ok ladies and gentlemen, how have we been?" There was a mumbled response which was followed by the role.

"Now I hope you haven't forgotten that your sports essay is due today. Yes I see that look of surprise, no extensions as you knew it was due." At that moment the bell went "Ok see you in third period. Don't forget the essay or it's a detention."

Megan jumped out of her seat and rushed out the door.

English was first and then maths.

Both of them were with Athena and maths was with Tommy as well.

She grabbed her English books from her locker before getting text message.

Tommy
What's up? R u ok? Wanna talk?

Megan ignored it and decided to detour from English to the nurses office.

"Hi Ms Jasper, I'm don't feeling so great."

"Really honey?"

"Yeah I have a really bad headache. Do you mind if I lie down for a little?"

"Sure, what class do you have right now?"

"English with Mr Dawe"

"Ok I'll let him know, you just rest."

Megan had been resting for 15 minutes before there was a knock on the nurses office door.

She heard some muffled voices but just wanted to sleep so she turned over.

Soon enough she felt a light tap on her shoulder and turned around to Athena, sitting on the edge of the bed.

"I thought you might have come here. What's up Meg? It's not like you to skip class."

"It's just that..." Megan started to speak before her throat got thick and tears started to prick at her eyes.

She couldn't hold it in any longer.

Tears were running down her face and Athena held out her arms for her.

They stayed that way until the bell for second period rang and Megan broke it.

"I'm so sorry"

"No no, don't be sorry. I knew there was something wrong. You can tell me if you want but if you don't I understand." Athena put her arm around Megan and waited for her to speak.

"C&D's is closing down, in the next 6 months and I'm going to be resettled into a different foster home or orphanage. It could be on the other side of country for all I know. Jess was sent to San Diego last night and I don't want to leave you or anything else behind."

Megan felt better saying it out loud but she could see that Athena was upset by the news.

"I'm sorry Athena, I don't want to leave you."

"Don't apologise, it's fine..." A comfortable silence fell on the girls. "I like your new hair by the way. It's very you." Athena gave Megan a big smile.

The kind that she knew Megan couldn't resist smiling back to.

They talked for the rest of the period and through snack.

Ms Jasper came in and out checking on them.

The two of them were getting ready to leave so that they could get to their period 3 sports class when Megan got another text.

Tommy
Why weren't u in math? What's going on? Are we still on for 4:30?"

Megan wasn't sure if she could face Tommy in sports.

She had almost talked herself into going when she noticed that it was a combined class.

A combined class of Mr Leoman and Mr Vasmir.

A combined class with her and Tommy's class and Guinevere's.

That was the last straw.

Megan walked to the front of the class and handed in her essay.

"I'm sorry Mr Leoman but I just spent the first two periods with the nurse. I'm not feeling great. Is it ok if I leave?"

"Sure Megan. I'll give you the homework tomorrow morning in Homeroom. I hope you feel better soon."

As Megan turned around to walk out she saw Guinevere sitting on Tommy's lap, all over him.

She looked up at Tommy's face and saw that he was starring right at her with a look of concern.

Quickly she left the room.

The rest of the day was French and Chemistry.

It went quickly and 3:30 rolled around in no time.

Megan had hid under the bleaches at lunch with Athena and now she was standing at the back of the library having a debate with herself.

The boys soccer practice finished in 45 minutes.

She had 45 minutes to convince herself to go down the fields with Tommy at 4:30.
