Naima rolled her eyes as her sister, Neema questioned her. Apparently, their mother had a whole break-down because Naima hadn't shown up to the Sunday dinner. And Neema "couldn't stand to see her mother hurt like that" 'Bullshit' Naima thought to herself shifting the phone to her right ear walking back into the living room.
"Neema, you never come. Why can't I just miss one dinner?" Naima groaned into the phone , as guilt began to wash over her.
"You're not me, hunny. Get your ass over here, I know you're there with Mr. Cutie. You can bring him too" The smirk on Neema was so wide, Naima could just sense it. She couldn't argue anymore, they had won. Neema went on to say something but was cut off when Naima hung up on her.
"Chrisssssss" She called out for him in disappointment from the other room grabbing his keys for him.
"What's wrong, ma?" Naima pouted walking to the front door.
"I gave in. We're going to that shitty ass dinner." Chris wrapped his arms around her neck as they walked to the car smiling as he stared at the side of her face.
"What?!" She finally snapped looking at him with a mug on her face.
"You're such a suck up." He laughed opening the door for her.
"Shut the fuck up, Chris." She felt the stress come upon her was again " I need another shower when I get home" she mumbled to her self aggressively putting on her seatbelt.
"I bet you do, kiddo." Naima just gave him a blank stare trying to figure out what he mean't by that. She lightly brushed it off her shoulder not saying a word, afraid that it would bring awkwardness among them.
A lump formed in Naima's throat as she scrolled through her phone. She was so disappointed in herself. Chris looked over at her, placing his hand on her lap and giving her a comfort smile. She looked at him trying to return it. If she didn't calm down any second, she would have an attack. So, she closed her eyes and set her head on the headrest to collect herself.
"You don't gotta do this, Naima. Let's just go, i'll take you out. Show you a good time" She looked at him with a slight smile. Shaking her head
"I feel so bad though. Like I'm letting everyone down." Chris just shook his head chuckling in disappointment
"Shorty you was about to have an anxiety attack. This shit ain't healthy, but aight Naima" Naima rolled her eyes looking away. She was about to start crying like a little crybaby and she couldn't help it.
"Can you not? like please"
"Whatever, kid." Naima shook her head chuckling to herself. She cleaned her self up a little bit before looking at Chris and nodding.
"You serious?"Chris just looked at her
"You gotta do this, right? Then bounce"
"Bye, Chris." She was going to start crying again, she could feel it in her throat. She unbuckled her seatbelt and looked at him one last time before shaking her head. "Fuck you, deadass."
"Ayo, fuck me? Fuck me because I don't want this to mess you up? Alright, Naima. Fuck me."
Naima had nothing to say, so she sat there. In hope of a miracle."Can you please, be there for me? I need you, I need someone. If this fucks me up that's on me! Just don't leave me" It was silent for a while. When he didn't respond she unlocked the door and stepped out. Naima was quite surprised of what came out of her mouth, she was never the type to express her feelings like she did with Chris
"He shook his head running his fingers through his hair in frustration. Opening the driver side and walking around towards her. "Come on" He mumbled. 'Now or never, let's do it' She sighed thinking to herself putting up a smile. She looked over to Chris, he looked so disappointed and it broke her heart. She tried to shrug it off, she would talk to him later. Naima used her right hand to open the door, when she swung it open she could smell her mother's cooking. It made her smile a little bit, she grabbed Chris' arm and lead him into her into the kitchen to surprise her family.
"Ima! My darling, I thought you weren't coming?" Naima shrugged at her mother giving her a hug. Naima furrowed her eyebrows thinking back to what her sister said earlier. Shrugging it off, she rolled her eyes once her she met eye-contact with her father because he was obviously wondering why the hell a guy other than him was standing in his kitchen.
"Mom, Dad. This is Chris, my friend" Naima smiled once she saw Chris politely greet her parents. Neema and Aviana walked in seconds later with smiles on there face happy to see Chris.
"Chris! Oh my God, Hi! What brings you here?" Naima looked at Neema as if she was a fool shaking her head.
"Wassup, y'all." Chris said hesitantly as he pointed to Naima as Neema pouted at the fact that Chris 'forgot' her name. 'Well played, Chris.' Naima thought to herself.
"Mom. If you don't need any help. Chris and I will be in my room" Naima's father gave her another stern look. She just shook her head kissing his cheek before grabbing Chris' hand, leading him to her room.
"Can we come?" Aviana inquired as Naima rolled her eyes shaking her head no.
Chris and Naima kept walking until they reached Naima's room. She closed the door sitting on her bed immediately, but for Chris he stood and examined her room for a bit. Naima just sighed and laid flat on her stomach waiting for a perfect moment to let the elephant in the room out. She felt the bed shift and she looked up to see Chris staring at her, she turned on her back staring back at him.
"Are you mad at me?" She said sitting up, while Chris nodded.
"Yeah, man. Why you doing all this? you know we don't gotta be here! So why are we"'
"I don't know! some part of me wants to prove to them that i'm better than they think i am" Chris sighed pulling Naima towards him as he noticed that she was on the verge of crying.
"You're such a lil crybaby" Chris laughed after a while of silence. He was no longer mad at her, he understood where she came from. She wanted to prove herself and and as a friend he was going to accept that.
Naima watched in disgust as Neema and Aviana tried to flirt with Chris infront of everyone in the living room as they just finished playing charades. She had enough of the bullshit game they were playing.
"Girls, bathroom break" Naima stood up fixing her clothes before grabbing both of the girls by their wrists.
