Skye Robertson - Subject 13

I found myself staring at Nate for the umpteenth time today. We haven't spoken for three days. I was still fighting an inwardly battle with myself as to whether I should apologise first or wait for him to talk to me. He turned around and for a moment we locked eyes. I couldn't read him. I wanted so desperately to crack the code that stood strong behind his eyes.
"Skye, come over here. Hurry," Colton called causing me to brake my enchanting gaze with Nate.
I ran towards Colton. The previous day when we were on the way to collect more water we happened to stumble across backpacks that contained tents and sleeping bags. How and when they got there was beyond all of us but we were glad anyways.
I ran towards Colton. He was inside the tent where a half dead jasper lay asleep. I entered hesitantly expecting Colton to tell me that Jasper is dead. I gasped at the sight. Jasper was awake, weak and pale, but awake. A large grin broke on my face as I ran towards him gently embracing him.
"Jasper, oh god,'' I whispered still in shock. "How are you feeling?''
"I'm fine Skye, don't worry.''
"How do expect me to not worry jasper, you almost died."
"So Colton told me you didn't want to leave my side while I was out, how cute of you,'' he said playfully changing the subject.
"I'm really sorry jasper, I honestly didn't mean what I said, I was just really angry and just being in this place its making me go crazy. I just-"
"Skye,'' he said cutting me off with a laugh "stop I get it I also said things that I didn't mean don't stress yourself out."
One apology down one more to go. I sat with jasper until the sun started to set. It felt so good to sit with someone and laugh like none of this shit was happening. It wasn't until I heard a girl's voice call out Nate's name I was pulled back into reality. I'd never heard that voice before it was completely unfamiliar.
I stood up off the ground and walked out of the tent. Nate stood with his back towards me embracing a girl I've never seen before. Clean, flawless pale skin, light blonde hair so light it almost looked white that looked as if she had washed it the day before. She had light blue eyes and light freckles scattered across nose. Suddenly Nate took her hand and dragged her into the forest. I debated with myself for a moment before deciding to follow them. They finally stopped and sat down on a fallen tree. I couldn't hear them from where I was standing. I moved a bit closer.
"Jayda, you really shouldn't be here it's not safe," Nate said leaning close to her.
"And you really shouldn't worry so much about me," little miss thinks-i-can-just-show up-and-be-up-close-and-personal-with-Nate said leaning closer to him as well.
"I'm sorry, I know I'm really glad you're here," Nate said with a smile kissing her cheek.
He kissed her cheek. It hurt me more than I probably should have. Accidently I placed my foot on a stick snapping it in half sending a rather loud cracking sound through the forest. Both their heads snapped in my direction. I quickly ducked behind a tree in an attempted to hide myself. After a minuet they went back to their conversation. I took it as my que to leave. I carefully walked back with my heart in my stomach.

It was the big New Year ball in Ruby two days ago. It was a huge event. My family went every year. All but me of course. When the clock struck midnight they had a huge fireworks display. Mom lets me go out to watch it from the window in the sitting room. They hadn't come home yet. I expected to hear my mom and dad stumble in drunk laughing and Colton dragging along exhausted and half asleep but I didn't. I was getting worried.
By the time it had got dark outside I was in full panic. I wanted so desperately to go out and find them but I knew I couldn't. I paced up and down the small space I called my bedroom. Time was passing by slowly and still no sign of my family.
At some point during the night I had fallen asleep. I was startled when I heard the door slam open but instead of three sets of footsteps I could only hear one. I froze. If it was an official I was screwed. The footsteps were coming my way. I was holding my breath. I shrieked as the basement door flew open.
Colton. He stood at the entrance heaving. He was dirty his clothes were torn.
"They know,'' his voice was frantic "about you."

Lacie, Colton, Jasper and I were laughing at something Colton said. For a second I got lost in the happiness. I didn't think about all the chaos that was going on but it only lasted for a second. I felt jaspers eyes on me. Faced his direction. He looked pissed.
"What," I mouthed.
He gestured for me to turn and I did. There stood Nate with his hand in his pockets. I walked towards him. He grabbed my arm and pulled me away from the group.
'' why were you following me?" it was dark but I could see in his eyes that he was angry.
"I don't know," of course I knew why I did it.
"What's going on with you Skye, first you snap at me. Then you don't talk to me for days and now your eavesdropping like you're a jealous girlfriend.''
"I'm not jealous."
"So then what is it? What's going on?" his eyes softened.
"I'm sorry Nate, I'm so sorry for what I said to you I didn't mean any of it and I get t if you hate me, If I was you I wouldn't even be able to look at myself-"
"Skye you're rambling," he said grabbing my hand.
"Sorry, I'm really sorry for everything," I said softly.
He smiled down at me.
"Who is she?" I ask softly. My curiosity taking over.
"Jayda."
"Jayda from where, I mean I've never seen her before and then all of a sudden she shows looking all clean."
"Clean?" he chuckled. I love it when he chuckles.
"Yes, clean. If she'd spent as much time as the rest of us here she would be dirty and greasy."
"What are you trying to say Skye," accusation was thick in his voice.
I have to be careful. My answer was guaranteed to start a fight. I could tell he cared for her but I need to know if she was a threat. As much as wanted to I couldn't be selfish right now.
"It's just that I've never seen her around the compound before and then all of a sudden she shows up here. I just don't trust her Nate and don't think you should either."
"Not trust her? I've known her for years. Don't be so quick to judge," he said in a low voice.
"I'm not judging Nate I'm just being careful."
"Careful," he scoffs "You didn't know me until two weeks ago were you 'careful' with me?"
"No Nate why would you say that."
He didn't respond. His jaw was clenched and his eyes dark with anger. His eyes lowered from mine as he turned away. I let out a sigh this is not how I wanted things to end.
