Once school had finished, I walked out to my car. As I was walking, I felt somebody bump their hip into mine. I turned my head to see Bo and smiled.
“Hey, I was wondering if you wanted to hang out? We could go to my place, or yours, or somewhere else.” Bo asked, sounding hopeful that I would be able to.
“Yeah, that’d be awesome! I’ll have to go home and let my mom know, though. You cold follow along so she can meet you, if that’s cool,” I responded happily. My first day, and I already had an invite to hang out.
“Sure! Let’s go,” he spoke with a quick nod before turning to his car. I did the same. We both started our cars, pulled out of the lot, and headed toward my home. We had parked in front of my drive way within ten minutes. Bo looked at the yard, a curious expression on his face. He turned to me.
“You live here now?” he asked, continuing after I nodded. “Oh. Some dodgy characters lived her before you… But, it’s not too far from my house!”
I made an ‘oh’ sound at that, gesturing for him to follow me to the door. As we crossed the threshold, he seemed a bit hesitant. His eyes wandered the flowers spread in front of the house. Realization seemed to dawn on him, as he averted his gaze to me, continuing in.
“Mom?” I shouted once inside, walking to the living room where I figured she would be.
“Hey, sweetie. How was school?” she greeted me with warm smile.
“It was great. I made a new friend. He’s actually here right now to meet you. Mom, this is Bo. Bo, this is my mom Torie.” I introduced the two as they shook hands. “Anyways, Bo was wondering if I could go to his house? I’ll be home before dark, and I have my phone on me.” I made sure to add in the first things I could think of to make her think I would be safe.
“Mmm…” she sounded and looked a bit hesitant. I understood, seeing as it was my first day here, and she didn’t know Bo. “Fine. As long as you text me his address. And if I call and you don’t pick up, I’m coming to get you immediately.”
A smile spread across my features. “Okay! Bye mom, love you!” I said happily as Bo and I headed out the door. “Is it cool if I just ride with you? My car's low on gas from the trip.” I asked, following Bo to his truck, hopping in the passenger side at his nod. A couple miles down the road, we pulled into a gravel driveway that led to a one level house. One the truck was parked, I got out to follow Bo inside. It didn’t seem like his parents were home, though there were two boys laying on the couch in the living room.
“Don’t worry about the twins. They’re my brothers. The one with black hair is Tom, and the brown haired one is Lewis,” he told me, pointing to each one as he said their names. Neither seemed to really acknowledge our presence, so we continued through the house. I was shown the bathroom, kitchen, and all the other rooms in the house as well.
“And lastly, my room,” he said softly as the door swung open to reveal a white walled room. It seemed pretty plain. Against the far wall sat a double sized bed with dark blue sheets, and an old looking wooden dresser, as well as a few band posters and such to cover the walls. “You can sit wherever you want,” he walked over to his bed, falling backward onto the mattress. I walked over to the bed, sitting down toward the pillows.
“So, what made you move here?” Bo asked curiously, turning over onto his stomach to face me.
“Well, my parents divorced when I was seven, and we stayed close to my dad so I could visit them both, and then my mom’s job transferred her here, and I had the choice to live with her or my dad, and I figured a new start would be interesting.”
“Is that ‘new start’ as interesting as you hoped?”
I waited a moment, a look of deep thought plastered across my features, before turning to Bo. “You could say that,” I answered with a smile. I received one back.
For an hour we continued talking, just sharing old memories, laughing, and joking around. Once conversation had died down, we headed down the stairs into the living room to watch a movie. The only problem we ran into was the twins- they were sprawled out on both ends of the couch asleep. I gave Bo an unsure glance.
“I got this,” he smiled brightly before moving behind the couch. I raised an eyebrow as I followed his movement with my eyes. I was given a wicked smile from Bo, before he rolled himself over the head of the couch, straight onto his unsuspecting brothers. They both startled with a surprised shout, glaring at their attacker groggily. “Get up sleepy heads. Go sleep in your rooms, not on the couch. We’re watching a movie.” One of the boys slowly stood to his feet, though the other seemed to decide against it. He was given a look from his older brother, who then raised his hand, displaying three fingers. Then two. And then one.
“What are you, my mothe-“ the boy scoffed, when he was abruptly shoved from the cushions and onto the floor by Bo’s foot. He sent Bo an aggravated glare before standing up on his feet to march off and up the stairs. I turned to Bo who was smiling smugly.
“And that is how you get stuff done in this household,” he laughed, laying back against one of the arm rests, stretching his legs out so that his feet were touching the other rest, while folding his arms back behind his head. I moved so I was standing in front of him, arms crossed over my chest. I tapped my foot on the carpet impatiently, giving him a ‘really?’ look. I was flashed a toothy smile. Mimicking Bo from earlier, I lifted three fingers, slowly beginning to lower one.
“Oh no, you aren’t,” Bo said unsurely, just as I lowered my second finger so there was only one left, and then once more so all my fingers were gone. I walked to his extended legs, lowering myself, or more like plopping myself, down onto his knees. They were quickly retracted from under me. The look on his face was heart broken, like a little kid that had finally been promised a piece of candy, had that special prize ripped out right from under their nose. It was such a pitiful look, though obviously fake. I stuck my tongue out at him in return and began to stick my nose up in the air, turning my head toward the tv. I jumped with a squeal as I was poked in the side by what I’m guessing was Bo’s toes.
“Not cool,” I narrowed my eyes, though a smile still slipped onto my face. Bo was about to say something else, when the front door opened.
