The rest of the week passed by slowly, especially since I was super excited for the date. In class, we had talked about what we were going to do, and it had been decided we were going to see a drive in movie that the town had once a month.
It was finally Friday night, and I had an hour before Nolan would be at the house to pick me up. I had a couple sets of clothes set out on my bed to choose from, and decided on a pair of jean shorts with a few layers of multi-colored tank tops. After that, I fixed up my mascara and bottom eye liner, and added on some brown eye shadow. Once I was finished with my make up, I pulled all my hair to the right side, braiding it down my shoulder. I then sprayed on some perfume, and looked in the mirror; it was pretty safe to say I looked hot.
I sat on the kitchen counter talking to my mom while sipping on aCapriSun. We had had the ‘talk’ which we had every time I went on a date, and she reminded me what I was to do if things went wrong. We continued talking until the door bell rang. I jumped down from the counter and ran to the door, smiling as Nolan stood before me clad in jeans and a light blue button up shirt.
“Ready to go?” he asked, offering his hand for me to take.
“Yeah. Bye mom!” I yelled over my shoulder, grasping his hand as I shut the door. Nolan helped me into his truck, before getting in himself and driving down the road. The movie was only a 15 minute drive from my house. There was a large screen set up at the end of a large field, where a few cars were already parked. Apparently we were twenty minutes early, since it could get pretty crowded sometimes, but I wasn’t complaining since we were almost in the very middle of the field, with a pretty good view. Nolan had turned his truck around for some reason, which had me confused.
“It’s funner to sit in the bed,” he told me after noticing my questioning glance. He hopped out of the door, me doing the same, and went around to the back. Pulling down the door that kept everything in the bed, I noticed that he had some bean bag looking things and a few blankets, as well as a cooler thrown in the back. The two of us climbed in and set up our seats. He had only brought one thin blanket, which we shared, so I was sitting fairly close to him, although the heat coming off his body was warmer than the blanket.
We sat and talked about ourselves until the movie, Happy Feet, started. Twenty minutes in, I could feel his hand slowly creeping toward mine, until our fingers were intertwined with his thumb rubbing circles on the back of my hand. When I looked up at his face, he was smiling happily at the screen, laughing at the penguins making fun of the leopard seal.
I jumped when there was a loud noise, like something landed on the hood of the truck. Nolan and I both turned around to see Bo trying to crawl up the windshield, to sit on the top of Nolan’s truck.
“Hey guys! What’re we watching?” he asked cheekily, sending a wink my way, and a raised eye brow to Nolan.
“Well, Emma and I are watching the movie. And so are you, but somewhere else,” Nolan replied, putting emphasis on the ‘somewhere else’ while giving him a stern look. Bo only chuckled, and reached into the cooler to pull out a soda.
“But I like it up here,” Bo pouted, suddenly smiling. “And, besides, I have pretty good view, if ya know what I mean.”
“Shut up, dude!”
“Hand check!” shouted Bo. With a sigh Nolan lifted his empty hand, as well as our intertwined hand up above the blanket to show we weren’t doing anything. Looking happy with himself, Bo nodded once and jumped down, running off to probably annoy someone else, but not before yelling “Be safe you two!” as loud as possible. Nolan just looked at me apologetically, to which I smiled.
“So they just show a movie every there month?” I asked as we sat down at a diner.
“Yup! My parents used to always take me when I was little. And then when we were old enough Bo and I started going,” he answered with a warm smile, looking like he was remembering his childhood.
“Welp, I should probably get you back home. It’s starting to get a little late” Nolan said after checking his watch once we were done eating. He paid for our food, and we headed back out to his truck. The drive home was filled with light conversation. As we pulled up to my house, Nolan got out and walked me to my porch.
“Thanks for taking me. I had a lot of fun,” I said truthfully, smiling up at him.
“Of course, we should do this again sometime, or something,” he smiled back.
“I’d like that,” I nodded, beginning to turn toward the door, when a hand on my shoulder stopped me.
“Wait! Would it be okay if I were to… kiss you goodnight?” Nolan asked nervously, speaking slowly. I instinctively licked my lips, giving him a nod as he lowered his head to meet me halfway. Our lips touched, almost hesitantly. It started out as a small peck, and slowly turned into a longer kiss, our lips moving together perfectly. My arms settled on his shoulders and around his neck, just as the porch lights flickered on and off a few times.
“That’s my mom, I better get inside,” I blushed, Nolan resting his forehead against mine.
“Goodnight, Emma,” he whispered, giving me a quick kiss and a heartbreaking smile, before turning around and walking back to his truck.
“Night,” I breathed out as he drove away, a content smile on my face.
