“Moose! Moose! Get back here!” I shouted, jogging through the trees that surrounded my house. “Dumb dog. I told mom not to let him out late,” I sighed, trudging a little deeper, following the light coming from the flashlight in my hands. I checked behind my back, being sure the house was still in view, since I did not want to get lost this late at night. I’d need to go exploring tomorrow. My mom and I had just moved in earlier in the day, and Moose had already gone missing. I stopped at the beginning of a steep incline, trying to see through the dark for the bulky creature I called my dog. Turning on my heels, I headed back toward the house, pausing as I heard what sounded like something panting, and a low growl.

“I’m going home, c’mon Moose,” I called, looking in the direction of the noise. My eyes widened at what stood before me- and it was definitely not Moose. The creature was tall, probably standing at about 5’ 9”. It was covered in long, dark strands of hair. I couldn’t see much due to the darkness, but whatever it was, it sure as hell wasn’t human. I shone the light in it’s face, and supressed a scream at it’s features. It had an elongated snout that snarled as the light flashed in it’s dark eyes. It had a human torso, and had arms and legs, though razor-like claws were attached to the finger tips. The only thing separating it from being human was the face, large amount of hair, and lack of an understandable language. It looked like a mix of a man and a large dog.

With another growl, it took an angry step toward me. I matched it’s pace, moving backward. I tried to look behind me so I wouldn’t trip, and also keep track of where the thing was, but it was difficult. Hoping for luck, I shone the light straight into it’s eyes, one last time, before chucking the flashlight at it’s face. I let out an ear piercing scream, as I turned on my heels and ran as fast as I could. I figured it was no use, I could already hear footsteps not too far behind me, along with loud panting. I turned my head to see, and it was hot on my trail. I screamed again, stumbling on my foot. I stuck my arms out to catch my fall, tumbling and rolling. I grabbed onto grass and vines sticking out of the ground to stop myself, and hesitantly looked up. Dizzy, I looked up and down, then side to side to clear my vision. My eyes slowly fell on a bunch of purple looking flowers.

My eyes darted up as I heard a huffing noise, as warm air blew from the creature’s nostrils. It stood, hovering above me, though it was still a few steps away. I was absolutely terrified. It tried to move forward, but hesitantly took a step back after. I could see it’s eyes looking over me and the ground I was on. It growled, sounding frustrated, but also slightly scared. I could see it slowly backing up, before turning around and running off.

“Emma?!” My mother yelled, stepping onto the porch as the front door screen slammed shut. She was running out here, carrying a flashlight in her hands. I hesitantly stood up, scanning for where the animal had gone off to.

“Over here,” I croaked, slowly making my way to my mom before full out sprinting to her side.

“I heard you scream and came running. What was it?” she asked worriedly, checking me over.

“I-i-I saw something. It looked like some large creature, and-“

“Oh, Emma. A creature, you say? It’s probably just your imagination tricking you in the dark. Come on, let’s go inside. We’ll find Moose tomorrow after school. He’s a smart dog, he’ll figure something out,” she said. I followed her back to the house, jumping when a loud howl erupted through the night sky, sending bone chilling shivers down my back. Whatever it was, it was looking for a meal, not for a friend. What worried me worse was the fact that Moose was somewhere out there with it.
