"Listen well, mutt, because I'll only explain this once," Charina says, her face towering over my crumpled form.

Somehow, I find the strength to look up into her eyes.

And for the first time, the once beautiful and flawless Charina Evans actually looks like the monster she is.

Chapter 11

Drew POV

It seems like a million years before Charina finally begins to speak. A faraway look is prominent in her crimson orbs.

"Anytime now," I manage to grunt out.

"This is a touchy subject. I will take all the time I want for my explanations," Charina growls out, breaking out of her strange reverie.

I have to admit that she had me worried for a second. I wasn't sure if she had turned into a statue. Not that I care or anything.

A sharp pain suddenly overtakes over my body. My head starts spinning, and I reactively press my palm against my forehead.

Yup, I definitely don't care.

Why did Charina have to throw me so hard? For a girl, she sure is strong. Then again, she is a vampire.

A vampire who is over a thousand years old. Seriously, the girl could be my great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandmother and then some. Yet instead, she's my mate.

My freaking mate.

Yippee for me. (Note my sarcasm.)

"I act the way I do because of you," Charina explains.

I wait for her to continue, yet she doesn't say anything else. Does she seriously think that I'm going to let her get away with blaming me for everything?

"What did I ever do to you?"

"When I say you, I am referring to your ancestors."

Hm. My ancestors. Honestly, the only thing I really know about them is that they existed.

"A very long time ago, I was a human - an eight year old human, to be exact," Charina continues. "That's when it happened ... I remember it being a nice day. The sun shone brightly and the birds perched upon beautiful green trees."

Flashback

A young girl with perfect blond curls and crystal blue eyes walks along a pathway, hand in hand with a boy who looks to be close to her age. Suddenly, the girl halts and bends down to pick up a white carnation.

"Look, Jason! It's so pretty," she exclaims. "I can't wait to show my mother and father."

The little girl twirls the carnation around in her hand a few times.

"It's just a flower, Charina," Jason points out.

"But it's so pretty. Don't you agree?"

"I guess. But flowers are kind of girly."

"Oh, Jason. You're such a boy sometimes," Charina tells him and let's out a cute giggle.

The pair of friends continue walking for a while, until they reach a wooden cottage. They walk up the steps to the door and enter the cottage.

"Mother! Father! I'm home!" Charina calls out.

Receiving no response, she searches around the house for her parents. Some mud on the floor leads her to the kitchen.

Two motionless bodies lay on the floor.
