{Aria's POV}

My focus blurred in and out for the next several minutes. It was hard to comprehend what was going on. I felt a numbing, burning sensation in my leg and there were people all around me. Their voices were like a million buzzing noises to me, and I couldn't make out what they were trying to say. At one point there was a man shining a light in my eyes, and his buzzing was louder than the other ones around me.

I could feel my body being moved onto something much more comfortable than the gym floor. Then I felt a breeze, as though we were moving. They wrapped a blanket over top of me just before a crisp, cold breeze hit my face and everything became much brighter. They must have taken me outside and were ready to load me into the ambulance.

I began to feel nauseous and closed my eyes for which seemed like just a few minutes. When I woke up next, there was a shooting pain in my leg. The room around me was white, and when my vision finally cleared up, I realized I was in a hospital room. I looked down at my leg which was wrapped up. Through the window to my right, I could see my parents talking to the doctor in the hallway.

Then I felt something grab my hand. Carter was sitting on a chair beside my bed, holding my hand in his.

"Hey, how are you feeling?" He asked with a smile.

"To be honest, pretty groggy and in a bit of pain," I replied, my voice sounding strained.

"Well that's to be expected after having surgery." Carter commented, handing me a glass of water.

I took a drink before saying anything more. "What happened?"

"You don't remember anything?" Carter asked with concern.

I shook my head in response. I tried to remember, but everything was a blur. I could only remember small pieces, but nothing that really told me anything.

"Well there was an incident at practice. You tripped and one of your teammates landed on your leg. The way you both landed.. well.. I guess it was in the worst possible position because your tibia broke in two places. It was kind of bizarre."

I thought about what Carter said, trying to think about the last thing I remembered from practice. I remembered completely outplaying Paige. She had started getting pissed, and then...

"Oh my god," I shouted in shock, startling Carter. "Paige, tripped me and Danielle landed on top of me."

"Seriously? But why would she do that?" Carter pondered. "Never mind. I think I have a pretty good idea of why."

Everything hit me all at once. What about districts? What about the rest of my season? What about the team? Would Paige start in my place? Would the rest of the team be able to pull off a win? This was my last season, and it was over. I closed my eyes and began to cry.

"Shh, Aria. Don't cry. Please don't cry. Everything is going to be okay." Carter soothed, brushing the tears off my face. It was no use though. My high school dream was to play in the state tournament, and now that dream was crushed.

{Carter's POV}

I promised Aria I would videotape the district basketball game for her. So there I was, sitting just to the left of the student section with Anna and Kaleb, cheering on our girls as they faced off against our conference rivals.

Anna was sitting next to me mumbling something about punching Paige's lights out if they lost this game. It took everything in my power to keep Anna calm at school earlier. I kept telling her that Paige was the team's only replacement for Aria, and we had to win this game. Finally, she realized that I was right, but was still determined to kick her ass if they didn't win.
