Chapter Fourteen

I hold the loaded gun close to my body. The rebels are closing in on the building where my younger brother is kept. My heart thuds against my chest and I think I may vomit. I grip Caleb's hand. We're hiding out in the nearby forest.

"It's going to be fine, Ivy. I promise." His voice helps to calm me down.

The plan is for the rebels to clear the building before Caleb and I enter. We're to hide out nearby, waiting for the flare that will signal that all is clear. I glance at my parents. Both grip guns. Their faces are grim. I suppose that's what I look like too, but more green. I feel my breakfast coming up my throat and run to the nearest bush. I empty my stomach and feel someone rubbing my back. When I finish, I turn around expecting to see my mother, but I see Caleb instead. I give him a sheepish smile and sit down.

We wait like that for a while. One by one, rebels fileout of the safety of the forest. Before my parents leave, I receive a hug and a kiss from both. They leave me wordlessly alone with Caleb. We sit in silence until we see the flare. We look at each other, stand, and break into a run. We run down a hill and into the Capitol. We reach the building and storm inside.

My fear has disappeared and rage has replaced it. I sprint through the foyer of the building and stop. Multiple bodies are on the ground, blood bubbling from their mouths and bullets in their bodies. I continue running. We only have a limited amount of time to find my brother. If someone finds him, three quick shots signal that he's been found. My ears strain to hear those shots, but they don't come. We continue throwing open doors and calling his name. We run down halls and up and down countless stairs.

Caleb and I charge throughout the building, searching furiously. Panic builds in my chest. We climb down the stairs and into the basement. This is the only place we haven't searched. I burst into the strange room and stand there. This isn't just a room, it's a dungeon.

"Ivy! In here!"

I know that voice. I love that voice. I run to the source and wrap my hands around the metal bars. Standing there, just inches from my face, is my brother.
