Chapter Sixteen

"Really?" I say, doubt lacing my words. I look at my mother, who sits across the room from me.

"Yes, Ivy. Really."

I look down at the white gauze covering my entire shoulder. I should probable change the dressing, but right now, I'm too shocked to.

"We're going to live with Annie?"

"Just until things die down. The districts are still trying to gain control of everyone. Then your father and I will take care of things in the Capitol. Annie will take care of you and Sky during that time," my mother says, a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth.

"This is great!" I exclaim. "I can actually teach Sky to hunt and Caleb will be there and...."

I realize I've spoken too much a little too late. Mother bursts into laughter. I blush a cherry red.

"Ivy, I already know how you feel about Caleb. Your emotions are so easy to read. Don't worry about I say. I'd worry about what your father thinks about this."

She continues laughing, even as she rises from her chair and leaves my little room. I can hear her chuckling as she walks down the hall. I let a smile drift onto my face.

I quickly hop out of my bed and practically run to the shower. I wash my hair record time and then pull on a pair of pants and a shirt. I dash out of my room and down the hall of the train. I skid to a stop when I reach the dining room. Skylar and Father are sitting at the table eating dinner. Caleb sits across from them. I smile at him.

"Want to take a walk?" I ask him.

He nods and looks at my father.

"Just be back before dark. You still need your rest, Ivy."

"Thanks."

I walk over to Sky and ruffle his hair.

"Love you, Sky."

He rolls his eyes and answers, "You, too, Ives."

I walk back to Caleb and lead the way to the only place with fresh air. We reach the back of the train within a few minutes. We don't speak as I open the door and step out into the light of the setting sun. I reach for his hand and grasp it tight.

"I'm going to be living with you," I say.

"I know. Your father told me."

"Oh."

"He also told me that he would cut off my fingers one by one if I broke your heart."

I gasp. Caleb laughs at my reaction.

"I told him that there was no chance of you getting a broken heart."

I feel the blood running into my cheeks. He laughs again.

Silence falls upon us. It's not an awkward silence, but a comfortable silence. He squeezes my hand and I squeeze back as we watch the sun fade from the sky. With his hand in mine, I feel safe. And that's enough for me.
