Well y'all gave me a little motivation to keep writing. Thank you for all your nice encouragement and I'll keep writing for you guys.
I looked at him for hours. The daylight fading. Nurses came in and out. Looking at me with pity. Gem was in the corner sleeping. We only left the room to pee. The doctor finally came in.
" I advise you girls to go home. You getting sick would be no help to Mr. Styles."
Gem and I looked at him. A serious look on his face. I was still bloody and dirty with a towel wrapped around my torso.
Gem stood up and looked at me.
I stared with a look of disbelief I wasn't leaving this room.
" c'mon Marie. He's right we're not helping Harry if we get sick and if we're sick and Harry gets better who's gonna take care of him?"
She was right. I'd be back early the next morning but I did need rest.
I stood up and I walked out with Gem. She held a strong stance that I wished I had at this moment but all I had was a bloody towel and a look of hopelessness.
I walked out of the hospital realizing I had no way to get home. I was flat broke.
"Hey Gemma. I have no way to get home."
"Hm."
I nodded and started to walk. The wind was biting at my skin and I was completely miserable. I heard a car slow down behind me.
I turned and saw Gemmas broken down SUV.
"Hop in."
I opened the door and thanked her.
We drove in a awkward silence and time seemed to linger on.
"Maria."
" Yes." I looked at her and was shocked that tears were streaming down her face.
"It's my fault he's dying."
I leaned in and caressed her arm
"No it's not Gemma."
" So many times. He repeatedly told me he wanted to quit. He was done with this life. He was hurting. All the beatings he had to endure when he was young. Was all my fault."
I looked at her Not knowing what to do and I hugged her.
She pulled over and we cried and comforted each other.
We finally got to my house and I got out.
"Are you going to be okay?" I asked
" Yes.... thank you Maria."
I nodded and walked in my house. My dad's car was gone and so was his BBQ grill. The house seemed empty now. The 2 story house I lived in for years. The house that held my pain and memories.
I opened the glass door and pushed open the wooden door.
The door was always unlocked even when we weren't home.
"Mom?"
I heard footsteps shuffling from the hallway and saw my small mother.
She looked so vulnerable now. She had a sadness in her eyes I now knew as heartache.
I hugged her. Feeling her warmth letting the pain in my chest ease a little.
She was hurting and much as I was maybe even more.
"I'm sorry mom."
She caressed my hair
"There's nothing for you to be sorry for."
She pulled away and gave me a happy smile.
"Why don't you wash up and I'll start dinner."
I nodded and walked up the stairs and into my room. Then into the bathroom. I let the warm water wash over my body. Let all the pain and regret go for just a couple of minutes. I heard tHe phone ring downstairs but I simply ignored it. It seemed I stayed in that shower for hours. When that water touched me it cleared my mind. It relaxed my body. It made life seem so much easier for just a few simple minutes.
I finally got out and dried myself and put on and oversized shirt and house shorts. Walking downstairs to the aromatic kitchen. My mother was beaming over the steaming pot and I couldn't help but smile with her.
"Why are you so happy?" I asked.
"Well the hospital called and Harry found a compatible blood donor and is undergoing surgery right now."
I ran to her and hugged her.
"You aren't fucking with me right?"
"My that mouth of yours."
The phone rang again and my mom pulled away and answered it.
"Hello. Lopez residence.... yes this is patty.... shut up really?..... thank you thank you Mr. Conner.... Yes I'll see you tommorow."
She looked at me with the biggest smile I have ever seen from her.
"Tell me mom."
"Well we all know your father was the one with the job and I was the house mom. Well we'll need to sell this house because we can't afford it. And you know how my best friend works at the car place downtown? Well he gave me a job to help out with everything."
" Mom I'm so happy for you."
" Finally everything seems to be falling in place."
"Yes. It is."
