Chapter Four

Even though the sun was shining, it was cool outside.

There was a strong wind blowing from the north- east.

And I was cold.

It was my own fault though... for I'd been standing on that doorstep for quite some time now.

Just staring at the doorbell. Not daring to ring it.

I looked down at my feet, it had been ten days since I'd last been here. Back then it had been to pick up Lynn with my mum's car.

But from that evening on, I had been too afraid to face her parents again.

After all, the culprits hadn't taken me, but her.

And I couldn't help the police with their investigation because I couldn't remember anything at all.

Because of that they were still following a cold trail, and that left my aunt and uncle without their daughter.

Their oldest child.

A chill went down my spine and I sighed. I had to go in sometime... they were expecting me after all.

If that thought hadn't crossed my mind, I'd probably turned away from the door and ran.

But I really couldn't do that.

After all, Bonny had asked about me as well...

I took a deep breath, as if the air I breathed in could clear away every doubt and replace it with some courage.

I lifted my hand, it only hovered in the air for a second before my finger pushed the button of the bell.

The sound of it rang through the hallway, and a few seconds later I could hear running footsteps from behind it.

Right before the door opened, I put a small smile on my face. Hiding the turmoil behind that mask.

Bonny was standing in the doorway, looking up at me.

My nine-year old cousin.

And Lynn's baby sister.

I knelt down in front of her, "Hey there, little bumblebee."

It was a nickname both Lynn and I had always used for her. Due to Bonny's vivid personality and her inability to sit still.

A real smiled appeared on my face when thinking about that and Bonny smiled back at me. She then closed the small distance between us by putting her small arms around me for a hug.

I hugged her close, kissing the top of her head.

When we pulled away, I looked her over, saying, "Say, I believe you've grown even more since last week!"

Bonny nodded proudly, "I did! The doctor said so!"

"The doctor?" I asked, "You're not ill are you?"

She shook her head, "No, silly, he said so when I went there with mummy last week."

I swallowed at that. Having a good idea why my aunt had gone there. Instead of thinking about it further, I asked, "Can I come in?"

"Yes! Of course! Mummy and daddy have been waiting for you!"

At that she took me by the hand and led me to the living room.

A place I knew by heart.

"Mummy! Nia's here!"

Aunt Jane stood up from the sofa and made her way to me.
