We have already driven for 45 minutes and yet Sebastian hasn't said two words to me. I looked in the backseat and saw that Draken had fallen fast asleep. I looked to Sebastian then back down to my fingers and sighed.

"I've made my decision." I mumbled, but knew he heard me. I felt him look at me then look back to the road.

"And what decision did you make?" I hesitated before looking up at him.

"I want to be with you. I feel safe with you and I know Draken is safe, and he likes you. You are great with him, and I love that. I don't know about this whole mate thing, for the simple fact that I don't know what it is. Explain it to me, please." He checked the mirrors as he switched lanes to pass a slow car. I checked to make sure Zekeial was staying behind us since they were following us.

"The fates decide when someone is born who their soul mate is. Who their life mate is. Some have the fortune of being able to meet theirs, other don't. Humans are the worst with mates, only because sometimes they can ignore it, or chose the wrong person." I looked over at him confused.

"How can you choose the wrong person? Wouldn't you feel it?"

"Not necessarily.  You didn't fully feel it yesterday when I told you, you just know it feels right to be with me. You see I, as soon as I saw you, I knew I would do anything in this world to have you. To make you happy. To never see you cry tears of sadness. That's what being a mate is. It's putting your significant other before yourself. Making their happiness a top priority.

But see, humans sometimes chose the wrong person. And by that I mean, they will sometimes settle down with another human, maybe have children, fall in love, but that is not their soul mate. So when the fates realize that, they will throw curve balls at them. They will make one of them cheat, or not be a good lover, or anything really to test their relationship. It usually breaks that relationship, and causes them to search for their rightful mate.

However, some humans don't think they are worth it. They will put up with the horrible relationships. The cheating. Anything, because they think they deserve it. Then they end up sticking with that human and living a very mediocre life." He shrugged. I frowned as I thought about all the relationships i've seen go to shit all because of one of the partners being unfaithful, or just not good in the relationship.

Then again i've also seen many relationships that have worked out from be beginning. Including Zekeial and Malachi. They were like a match made in heaven. The moment they met it was like they knew they were meant to be with each other.

I looked to Sebastian.

"So how come vampires don't do that?" He glanced at me then looked back to the road.

"Because no matter how many people a vampire is with, they know if the person is their true mate or not. But once they even get a glimpse of their mate, no one will ever suffice. No matter what. Vampires search for hundreds of years for their mates, and once they find them, they never let go."

I nibbled my lip as I thought about it. I checked to make sure Draken was still asleep then sighed.

"What's wrong?" I played with the hem of my shirt.

"You don't deserve to have me as a mate. You deserve someone so much better." Before I knew what was happening we were pulled over to the side of the highway. I gasped and quickly looked behind us, just to see that Zekeial had pulled over behind us but made no move to get out. My face was grasped between two strong hands and forced me to look into a pair of beautiful black orbs that were slowly tinging red. I gasped knowing it was his vampire senses taking over.
