The sound of the pistol echoed around the cavern. The Professor fell to the ground, but Spike snatched the box out of the air and snapped his pistol back in its halter. He signaled to his men.
Enoch spied a sharp piece of rock jutting out of the wall.
"Get our stuff, let's go." Spikes men obeyed his command.
Enoch reached out but it was just a little too far away.
The men looked at the Mayrons, and questioned their leader.
Enoch stretched for all he was worth, when suddenly, he tripped.
"I'll leave them." Spike said without even looking up.
Enoch fell down onto his belly, but not before his ropes had landed, and were sliced on the rock.
Four explosions of a gun rang through the cavern. All Spike's men fell dead. "I'm not thinking like the typical villain, like I'm just going to leave you here thinking that you're going to die, but you really get away." Spike said to Enoch as he backed away into the tunnel, pistol still smoking.
"I really don't care if you get out, nothing you can do will stop Me." With that, he turned and walked away. Enoch didn't bother telling him that he went down the wrong tunnel. He got up, snatched his gun of the floor, and ran after Spike.
Enoch kept twenty feet away at all times. Spike pushed on through the tunnel without stopping. Occasionally, Spike would chuckle to himself. Enoch could shoot him right there and then, but something stopped him. He didn't know what it was, but he just couldn't shoot this man. He wasn't doing anything to him or his family. True, he had killed many, beat up Enoch, and hurt his father and brother, but that was all said and done. He could not kill Spike without a fair fight. His body still hurt from the beating Spike had given him, but how did that matter? He wasn't still beating him up. Enoch tossed all these thoughts of the evil man a few feet in front of him around in his head. He really wasn't sure what to do. He wished he could ask his father, but his father had been knocked out by this same man he was debating over. Enoch made a command decision. He would not let this man Spike hurt or kill anyone else. Enoch clenched his jaw, pulled up his pistol, took aim, and... a scream. Spike's head disappeared from view. The scream never stopped. Enoch ran up. Spike was clawing at the edges of what seemed to be a natural bottomless crevice as he fell. The gold box was spinning in the air, where Spike had threw up his arms, trying franticly to stop his fall. The box smashed on the opposite side of the chasm and the lock busted open sending gold in all directions. None of the pieces of valuable metal made it out of the huge pit, except for one small brick which landed only inches away from the big crack. After minutes of standing there after the scream had died away, he picked up the gold brick and turned on his head lamp to see it better. It was about six inches tall, three inches wide, and an inch thick. Enoch marveled at how beautiful it was. He snapped out of it and ran back to wake his father and brother. They both had a bloody spot on their temples, but other than that, they were ok.
"Dad! Wake up!" Enoch said shaking him vigorously. Eli's eyes half cracked open and he mumbled something unintelligent. "Nathan! Get up!" He shook Nathan as well.
"What?" asked Nathan in a weak voice.
"Come on, we've got to go." Enoch told Nathan, as he finally propped himself up on one elbow, a bit dizzily. After many tries Eli finally woke up. In fifteen minutes, they were ready to trek back up to the park. Nathan and Eli were still out of sorts, but they could make it. They collected all their packs, put them on, and walked back through the tunnels below.
