They speeded in silence towards the rendezvous point. The huge red splotch appeared on the radar, and they could see faint beams of red in their path.

"Better get ready, kiddo. We're almost within com-range."

A blip appeared on the com screen.

"EARTH CARFT, VACATE SECTOR IMMEDIATELY. PLANET IS SCHEDULED FOR DEMOLITION."

"This is you time to shine, kid." Said Buzz.

Carl floated towards the airlock. He double checked his space suit, and he was ready to go. He closed the hatch and started the depressurization sequence. His heart was beating through his shirt. Sweat drenched his face. The outer hatch opened, and the blackness filled his eyes. The only thing he heard was his heavy breathing, and his throbbing heart. He opened his com-link.

"EARTH HUMAN, VACATE SECTOR IMMEDIATELY. PLANET SCHEDULED FOR DEMOLITION. WHAT IS YOUR PURPOSE IN ORBIT AROUND EARTH?"

The menacing red craft pierced the blackness. Carl's whole body went numb. All of his life was leading up to this point.

He opened his mic.

"I'm arma-gettin' outta here!"

Silence.

Massive, roaring laughter filled the other end of the line. The entire alien spacecraft trembled with uproarious, horrible laughter.

"EARTH HUMAN, YOU MAY REMAIN WHERE YOU ARE. DEMOLITION OF PLANET EARTH HAS BEEN CANCELED. WE CANNOT BEAR TO DESTROY A PLANET THAT EXPORTS SUCH QUALITY HUMOR. END TRANSMISSION."

The red craft left.

Carl returned to the airlock.

"You did it. You really did it, kiddo." Said Buzz Aldrin. "Now let's get outta here."

The airstrip at Kennedy Space Center was lined with cheering people, who were very happy to not be dead. The shuttle appeared from the sky, and touched down on the asphalt. Dozens of world leaders crowded around the space shuttle's exit hatch. Roaring applause and cheering filled the air as Carl stepped from the shuttle. Vladimir Putin and Bernie Sanders grabbed him p, and lifted him above the crowd. The cheering grew louder, and confetti fell from the air like leaves...

And that children, is how I saved the world.
