Friday, the day before the competition, Ran came to school heavy-hearted and worried. As she was about to enter her classroom, her teammates surrounded her and blocked her way. "Are you alright, Sensei?" "What did Kudo Shinichi do to you?" "Are you hurt?" were the questions that were asked by her teammates. Those questions rang her ears until she couldn't take it anymore. She asked them for silence and then said, "I'm alright guys, no need to worry. Just think of our competition tomorrow. Think about our victory. Think about positive thoughts. We will win." Then she entered the classroom, leaving her classmates astonished.
As classes were on-going, she couldn't help but think of the competition. Her heavy-heart turned from worry to determination. She wanted to win. She wanted to get that trophy. She wanted Teitan Highschool to continue that winning streak.
Hours later, the school bell rang.
Time flew so fast for Ran. She hurriedly went to the gym for another practice after school. She didn't think of the time. Her only thoughts were about the competition. During training, she worked with all of her heart, mind and strength. She didn't know where or how she got this strength and determination. She just wanted to win and get that trophy, that's all.
Hours passed and training ended. Ran rushed home to get a good rest for tomorrow.
At 7:45am, Kogorou and Ran were waiting outside for a taxi. When a taxi was visible at their sight, Kogorou waved his hand for the driver to notice, and he did. He pulled up just outside the Detective Agency where the father and daughter were standing. Kogorou and Ran hopped in the car and the driver, with a lovely, warm voice, asked, "Where to?" Ran, with a tense tone, responded, "National Stadium please."
On her way to the National Stadium, where the competition will be held, Ran had been praying for the competition that she might win the victor's trophy. Kogorou was about to light his cigarette until the driver stopped him for he'll have to pay a fine if he smoked in the taxi. Bored, Kogorou stared out the window for the whole time. While the driver was driving, he realized something and asked the two of them with a nervous tone, "Um... Are you guys... Gonna compete in that karate competition?" Ran was too tense to focus on her surroundings so it was Kogorou who answered, "Uhh, yes." "Waaah! Sugoi-sugoi! (Wooow! That's so cool!) If only I could join you guys. I love watching these type of competitions!" was his response. Kogorou just smiled and turned to Ran, "Oi, Ran. Are you alright?" She looked back at her father, smiled then nodded. She couldn't stop thinking about the competition. What if I lose? What if Shinichi will let me do embarrassing stuff? What if I make Teitan lose its winning streak? It will be all because of me! Ran closed her eyes and imagined herself holding that trophy, seeing her opponent drop on the ground, all because of Ran's kicks and punches. Think positive thoughts, think positive thoughts. She felt the car turn right; a sharp turn. When she opened her eyes, her eyes focused on the big building that was coming closer and closer to the car's view. The taxi pulled up on the big entrance of the building. Then she realized that she was already at the National Stadium.
Ran felt a little queasy from the ride as she stepped down the taxi. The atmosphere of the stadium was so tense that Ran felt more uneasy than before. With high hopes, the father and daughter entered the grand building. 8:20am was shown on the clock of the stadium, which means that Ran still has 40 minutes to prepare for the competition. She had to make the most of the time. As they continued walking the big aisle of the stadium, they saw two aisles at the end, making the connecting hallways form a Y-shape. On the left were the locking rooms and gym and on the right was the seats and the stadium itself. Ran had to turn left to prepare for the competition so the father and daughter had to separate. The girls' locker room was bigger than she'd imagined. Sarcastically speaking, it had the pleasant smell of sweat. It was filled with fit, healthy-looking girls, and some of those girls were Teitan's karate team. "Konnichiwa!" she greeted one of her teammates. "Konnichiwa!" she greeted back while tying up her karate belt. Ran quickly changed to her karate outfit and tied her karate belt around her waist. She, then, called her teammates to train with her, and they agreed. As soon as she stepped out of the locker room, the immediate room after the locker room was the humongous gym filled with varsity players. But she didn't have time to admire them. They have to train. Just at the right moment, the other guy karate teammates of Teitan were finished preparing and met up at the stadium. "Yosh! Let's do this!" Ran exclaimed. "Yosh!" the team exclaimed back. While they were training, the coach arrived late. "Sorry to keep you waiting!" shouted the coach as he was approaching his determined team. The team was so surprised at coach that they paused at their training for the coach's outfit was too much of a sight. He was wearing a blue-and-white-striped shirt with a large, pink caption of 'Go Teitan Highschool!' in front of his shirt. "Oh my, Sensei. That's so gay!" "Sensei, you're weird." "Coach, you look like a maniac." were the comments of the teammates. Coach, who suddenly became irritated, couldn't handle their comments so he blew his whistle. The team simmered down. "Continue your training!" said the coach with a firm voice. Everyone followed the coach and continued training.
Minutes passed and it's the time for the competition to start.
Ran saw the list of people whom Teitan is gonna compete. She's up against a Masato Toshu. What an unusual name, Ran thought. As time flew, she felt the tension of the atmosphere. She saw her teammates beaten and bummed. She turned to see the scoreboard. Teitan: 3, Jikogenba: 4. Oi oi, what is our team doing? Are they all right? Ran, getting worried every second, bowed her head. If there's really Kami-sama listening, please, please help us win. Suddenly, loud roars of cheers were heard throughout the stadium. When Ran turned to look at her teammate, she saw a very splendid sight. She saw their opponent lying down, clutching his stomach area with her teammate jumping up and down with his arms up high. Yosh! She happily looked at the scoreboard. Teitan: 4, Jikogenba: 4. It was finally Ran's turn to shine. As she was walking towards the center of the stadium, she can hear the many cheers of Teitan fans, one of those was Kogorou. "Ran, ganbate!" were the screams of her supportive father. This encouraged her. Coming up was her opponent, Masato Toshu. He seems to be 5-feet-10 with a skinny yet muscular built. While he was walking towards the center, Jikogenba fans were shouting "Go, Masato, go!" while his teammates shouted "Go, captain, go!" Captain? This might be a very lethal fight, Ran thought. When they were both at the center across each other, she got a good look at her opponent. Her eyes grew wide as she looked at his face for she couldn't believe what she saw. He... He looks like...
Shinichi.
