CHAPTER ELEVEN: “MEND A BROKEN HEART”
I hang up on Jessie and Danny looks at me curiously.
-‘What was that all about?’
-‘It was Jessie.’
-‘Yeah, I noticed,’ says Danny and rolls his eyes.
-‘What’s up with you?’
-‘Are you givin’ her another chance?’
-‘No, I-I don’t think I can, I mean, she… I-I do love her, honestly, but…’
-‘I have no idea what you’re sayin’ but you’re cute when you’re stutterin’.’
I give him a ‘really’-look and roll my eyes at him. He comes closer, his leg is pressed into mine and he places a hand on my thigh.
-‘Really Addie, I think you’re really cute. And beautiful. And amazing. Jessie doesn’t deserve you.’
-‘Danny, stop,’ I say and try to push away.
-‘Addie, why won’t ya give me chance? And why would you give Jessie a second chance?’
-‘Because I love her, and you’re just a friend.’
-‘Don’t ya want to be more than just friends?’
I jump up and stand in front of him so I can look straight into his eyes. His eyes are filled with love and admiration.
-‘Dan, please don’t do this,’ I beg him.
-‘Addie, why?’ He hangs his head down sadly.
-‘You know why.’
He looks up, his eyes hopeful.
-‘Maybe… maybe I can help.’
-‘Well, this doesn’t help Dan.’
-‘No, I know, but maybe I can help win Jessie back.’
-‘How could you possibly help me getting my girl back?’
-‘We could make her jealous.’
-‘I could pretend to be your boyfriend at the wedding, that’ll make her jealous.’
-‘That won’t make her jealous, it will make her happy, she will be happy I finally moved on and found myself someone too.’
Danny shakes his head and takes my hand in his.
-‘Adele, it’s obvious you don’t know nothin’ ‘bout love.’
I smile at him and he kisses my hand.
-‘Do you think it will work? The plan, I mean?’
-‘No, I know it will work! Now call Jessie and ask if you can bring your boyfriend to and when she asks who you say Danny, and then wait for her response.’
I dial Jessie’s number and she picks up very soon.
-‘Hello?’ she asks, slightly out of breath.
-‘Hey, it’s Addie, err I was wondering if I could bring someone to your wedding?’
-‘Yeah, of course you can… Who are you bringing?’
-‘I’m bringing my boyfriend,’ I say confidently. Jessie gasps and a low noise escapes her mouth.
-‘T-T-That’s great, w-w-who is it? Do I know him?’ she asks panting. What is she doing? I think I don’t even want to know.
-‘Yeah, you know him.’
-‘Well, who is it?’ she asks and slowly gets her breathing back.
-‘Do you want to know?’
-‘Of course I want to know!’
-‘Well, it’s Danny. I’m bringing him, okay?’
-‘WHAT!?’ Jessie shouts, ‘You and him!? I warned you, remember?’
-‘He is not like you said he is. Once again, you said something that didn’t come true,’ I snapped, ‘Danny is sweet and caring. He loves me.’ I give Danny an awkward look and he chuckles.
-‘He only pretend he loves you. Why don’t you believe me?’
-‘You promised you’d wait and you didn’t. I want to believe you but I can’t.’
Jessie sniffs.
-‘I-I understand. I screwed it up, didn’t I?’
I remain silent and Jessie speaks up again.
-‘Listen, I will send you a letter with all the information about the wedding, all right?’
-‘Yeah, that’s okay, I’ll see you there yeah?’ I say making Jessie laugh.
-‘Of course you will Ads! Bye!’
-‘Bye,’ I say and Jessie hangs up.
I turn to Danny.
-‘Guess what?’
-‘Can I come?’
-‘Yeah, you can!’
I give him a high five.
-‘Our mission has started! We need a plan!’
