~COPYRIGHT 2015~Matt hadn't traveled far from camp. He had driven the skiff a mile away to a secluded area where he could make a camp and be by himself for a while. He was sitting by the fire working on a small project when he heard the shots.
One...okay nothing seemed wrong yet. Two...alright this was getting weird. Three...there was an emergency at camp.
He hustled to his skiff, carrying his lights with him and setting them up so he would be able to see in front of him when he drove back to camp.
His heart pounded as he rode out into the ocean. Who knew what was happening.
Billy, Bam and Gabe scanned the water in front of them frantically. They couldn't hear the sound of her skiff anymore, which either meant that she was too far to catch up to or something terrible had happened.
"Da, I see something over there!" Bam yelled, pointing to the right.
Billy changed the direction of the boat and slowed down. They all squinted trying to see what was out there. There was definitely something.
They changed the direction of their gaze when they heard another engine coming up on them. There was Matt, pulling up in a skiff.
"I heard the shots. What is going on?" he asked.
They all stayed quiet.
"What's wrong?" Matt repeated, frantic.
"Lorelei got your letter and came looking for you. When she found out you had left, she took off on her skiff without a light or anything," Billy told his eldest son.
Matt's blood ran cold. His love was in danger. He needed to find her.
"We need to find her!" he shouted. "Come on, what're we just sitting here for?"
"We thought we saw something over here. We were investigating," Gabe informed him.
Matt shifted his skiff over and followed side by side towards what they were seeing. They were awfully close to the beach and in this particular area there were many rocks. What they came across first was an empty skiff...Lorelei's skiff. Everything seemed to go in slow motion in Matt's head as he looked around the area.
As he moved closer to land, he caught a horrific sight. There was Lorelei, face down in the water. She must have hit a rock with the skiff and flown into it, falling unconscious.
"DA!" Matt screamed. He heard his father's skiff nearing them.
He didn't even think, he jumped into the water and swam out to her. The water was shallow enough for him to stand up. He pulled her head out of the water.
"OVER HERE!" he screamed to his family.
Everybody's eyes grew wide as they saw the scene before them.
"She's not breathing. We need to get her to town!"
Bam and Gabe hopped out of their father's skiff and jumped into Matt's.
"You two go. We'll go back to camp," Bam insisted. "GO!"
Matt lifted Lorelei's body into the skiff and got to work as Billy rushed towards town. Matt felt for a pulse. There was none.
"Da..." Matt whispered, tears rushing to his eyes.
"Don't just let her die son! Give her CPR!"
He immediately began CPR. He had been doing it for a while and he checked her vitals. There was still no response.
"Come on!" he screamed. "Don't die on me dammit!"
He continued to do the maneuver until she began to cough. He turned her to the side and let her spit out the water. She passed out immediately after. He checked her pulse and breathing and although they were weak, she was alive. He picked her up and cradled her in his lap.
"It's going to be okay, Princess," he whispered in her ear, kissing the side of her head.
It took some time and careful concentration, but they finally arrived in town. Matt jumped out of the skiff and practically ran to the clinic. The doors were locked and the lights were turned off. He knocked frantically on the door, knowing the doctor lived inside.
A few minutes later, the lights flipped on and the doctor came wobbling down the hallway.
"Can I help you?" he asked grumpily.
"My girlfriend...she almost drown. I had to give her CPR. She has a gash on her head that has not stopped bleeding. I didn't get a chance to look the rest of her body over," Matt said quickly.
The doctor opened up the door and ushered Matt into the examination room. Billy came running in after them.
"Put her on the bed," the doctor instructed. "I'm going to have to ask you to wait in the lounge while I examine her."
"No, I'm not leaving her," Matt said.
"Matt, come with me," Billy ordered. "This needs to be done in private."
With his shoulders slumped, he followed his father out to the lounge. He paced back and forth, awaiting the doctor's arrival.
"I am going to go to Lorelei's house and inform her mother and father of what happened," Billy told Matt. "Are you going to be okay here alone?"
Matt nodded his head and Billy left the clinic. He continued to pace back and forth until the doctor came out half an hour later.
"Is she okay?" Matt questioned.
"I listened to her lungs and it is evident she still has some water left in her right lung. Because of this she is very susceptible to get pneumonia. You are going to have to encourage coughing and deep breathing. If at any point she starts to feel sick, you must bring her back immediately," the doctor said. "I did sew up the cut on her forehead with about 15 stitches. You will need to keep that clean. She is awake right now."
"MY BABY! WHERE IS SHE?" Megan came flying through the door with James in tow. Billy came running in after them.
The doctor ushered Megan and James into the examination room to see their daughter. Matt was about to follow, but Billy held him back.
"Give them some time with their daughter," Billy said.
Twenty minutes later, Megan and James came out of the room.
"Matt, she's asking for you..."
