"Come again?" I asked, my mouth full. It was really just one cracker but it was pretty big. So delicious. I suddenly wondered if he was getting all of these snacks and exotic foods from other realms.
"Mi'Lady, it is not lady like to talk with your mouth full." Like I cared? A man I had never seen before just said this wasn't the first time we've met. I thought that was a lot more important than speaking with a stuffed face, but I quickly chewed and swallowed before opening my mouth again. He was lucky he had beautiful eyes, otherwise I wouldn't have listened.
"Fine," I grumbled. "What do you mean this isn't the first time?"
"You and I have been together since we were born into this world. Or, I should say, I've been with you since you were born." I popped another cracker into my mouth. "Your parents, that is Sir Cei and Lady Mari, assigned me to you."
"Ashi-" Oops. I totally forgot. Chew. Chew. Chew. Swallow. There. "Assigned?" I repeated. "What do you mean?"
"How do I explain this properly?" He seemed to think for a second or two. I told him to take his time.
"You know I'm going to get really really fat one day. Your cooking is just too good. Whatever is in this bread and crackers... I'm pretty sure no one can make simple snacks taste like this." I licked a finger. "Just keep in mind that you will never make me drink milk." He cracked a smile, showing perfectly white teeth.
"I am sure I will."
I snorted. "Sure. You don't know where to start, am I right?" He hesitantly nodded. "Just start from the beginning. How did you end up becoming my personal assistant?" I took a sip of tea.
He took a deep breath before speaking. "The Warren family has been serving the Walker family for generations as far back as the third century." My eyes widened. "I am from the Warren family and you are from the Walker. Had you not been taken your last name would be Walker not Johnston, but I digress. The Warren family is a family of servants, and as servants we also act as guardians or protectors for the Walker family.
We each are assigned someone to serve the moment we are born into the world. A Warren female are to serve males, and males to serve females though there have been some cases when a Warren member serves the same sex. They do this," He explained at my raised eyebrows. "So that way the two would- how do you say it?- come together more. Its supposed to be their way of courting. Because both families have good names its only right that they marry each other. Though... Not everyone sees it this way-"
"Wait," I cut in. "So Mari and Cei?"
He nodded. "Mari was a Warren and Cei a Walker. Mari was Cei's protector all the way until the end. Their case was different. Cei was the prince and later King of Wolf Walkers. When Mari married Cei she became the Queen."
"So that's why Cei said I was the next Queen..." I mumbled.
"And you still are. You are the lost Princess of Wolf Walkers. When you marry you'll become the Queen."
It truly was a nice title. But wait. If I was the lost princess then... "If Cei and Mari are dead, what happened to the rest of the family when I was taken?" I'd supposedly been taken fourteen years ago. That's fourteen years I was gone. The clan had no leader.
"When the Walker family was attacked, they were solely attacked just because they had abilities no others could have. The Rogues Ada and Alphanso wanted the royal powers so they went after Cei and Mari, where they met their end. They'd taken you because you were just a baby, and I'm guessing they figured the Walker family would be destroyed without you. The rest of the family that wasn't killed and that managed to escape is living with the Warren Clan though they've probably gone back by now."
