Alex tossed and turned on his small bed below decks. Of course this is not where he wanted to sleep but his bride to be insisted, well more like begged him to, and of course he obliged. Alex had told himself to get used to giving her whatever she wanted. Now thats not usually how this whole marrige thing was suppose to work, normally the wife was supposed to have the children of the heir and do whatever she was told.
"But Alison was diffrent" he thought. He actually wanted to marry her. When he told this to his father he thought that he would never agree. While his father had always had a place for the Shaws in his heart he could only think of what everyone would say. But Alex couldnt thin of anyone else he actually would enjoy seeing everyday for the rest of his life.
So after a few days of pressing the matter his father finally agreed. At first when he asked her he was for sure that the burning slap across his face was a definate no. After she stormed out of the room he got up and went after her. He followed her to the maids quarters and stopped at the doors. Her mother had just stormed in after her. He listened to their heated conversation. The content was basically Mrs. Dolores begging her to change her mind and Alison protesting. After her mother told her how great it would be to be married to the soon to be duke Alison agreed. Alex actually thought she only said yes to get her mother to shut up.
He heard her foot steps so he quickly scurried f rom the door and found himself in the garden. He sat down on the fountain and heard Alison approching him. She mumbled something.
"What?" He asked her, "What did you say?"She answered in a aggrivated tone. She kept her head down as she did so.
"I said ill marry you." As he heard these word his smile grew bigger and bigger. "Oh Alison this is wonderful!" as he tried to put the ring on her finger she snatched her hand away from him and thats when he remembered that she wasnt doing this because she wanted to, but she was doing it for her mother, she would do anything she coud for a chance to give her mother a better life. And thats when his smile slowly came down, he then realized that from then on whenever he asked Alison to do something she would do it if she had to, but ot because she wanted to.
She snatched the ring from his hand and shoved it on her finger. With that she left him by the fountain with a sad look on his face.
He sighed. The uncomfortable bed wasnt the only reason he couldnt sleep. Now he laid there wondering why she didnt love him, or even like him. After the proposal he tried to apologize numerous times. To explain to her why he had to ignore her for the past few years and how none of it was really his fault but she wouldnt have any of it.
Alex finally couldnt take it anymore. He got out of bed and asended up to get to Alison's cabin. Well his cabin. As he aproched the double doors that were covered by curtains he could see that there were still candles dimly lighting the room. He slowly pushed the door open as not to make any noise.
He quietly crept into the room and closed the door behind him. There he saw a sleeping Alison. She looked beautiful, and peaceful. there was no furrowed brow that was usually there when she was awake. Her waist length wavy brown hair was fanned around her face. He didnt want to wake her peaceful form but he had to. The time to talk was now.
He placed both of his hands on her arm and gently started to shake her. He whispered "Alison, Alison wake up. Ali wake up."
Her eyes open with a confused look that turned angry when she realized who was waking her.
"Alex what the hell are you doing in here it's the middle of the night!" She said in an angry quick whisper. She gave him a once over and turned red in the cheeks."Oops" Alex thought.
Alex tried to think of something subtle to say. he hadnt actually thought about how it would look to Alison sneaking into her room in the middle of the night when they were both half dressed. "Great." he thought.
"I couldn't sleep" he said. "Idiot" he thought. That sounded worse
Alison looked heated."That's not my problem!" She said.
Alex answered quickly but shly, he hadnt even began the talk he wanted to have and he already felt defeated. "Well I was just wondering if we.....if we could talk.
She gave him a suspicious look as if she was really trying to read what he wanted " What about?" She asked.
He waited awhile before his reply, his head hung low. Then he finally said it. "Wh-why do you hate me s-so much?"
At this Alison looked shocked, and Alex thought that he'd blown it but instead she looked at him with wide eyes and said "My gosh you, you really don't know do you?"
" Well yes I know what you've told me, but it doesn't seem like enough for you to despise me as much as you do." She looked as if she was trying to contain her anger but was still confused.
"Really?"
"Really."
Alison averted her eyes downward in a way that looked as if she was thinking, thinking of what to say next, then Alison took his hands. Alex's heart fluttered a little. "This is it." He thought to himself, "We are finally going to work things out." Alison looked into his eyes. But as she opened her mouth to speak there was shouting outside. The door burst open and in came one of the sailors looking out of breath. He saw them and blushed a little.
The sailor cleared his throat. "Sorry to interrupt sir erm but an unidentified ship has been spotted."
"Just my luck" Alex thought to himself. As soon as things are about to get resolved they are interupted.
"Thank you Hobbs." The sailor departed. Alex turned to Alison, "We'll talk later?" He asked her with a hopefull expression.
"Of course" She said. Alex was releived with those words. He rose and softly kissed Alison's fore head then exited the room, and as he did so he could only chuckle,and wonder "What fresh hell has found me now?"
