A Diamond in the Rough

Chapter 7

She knew my name. She knew who I was. I snapped my head back but she was gone. The store was pitch black and the open sign that had been pathetically flickering in red and blue lights had faded out. I'm the key? My heart started beating faster and I was all of the sudden really hot.

"You ok?" Zach's voice broke through my trance and I darted my eyes to him.

He was leaning up against the flying motorcycle with his hands stuffed in his pockets. The worried look in his eyes made me realize how panicked I probably looked. 

"Yeah, that was just really creepy-." 

"Honey, I'm home!" a loud voice cut me off.

Car doors slammed behind Zach and we both turned and looked out into the strangely deserted streets. Now that I think about it, all the people and the noise of the bustling city had disappeared. We were standing in the middle of a ghost town. About five guys who were all dressed in black started to come towards us and the person in the middle was the one who spoke.

At first I didn't realize who it was, but then he removed his hat and sunglasses and dropped them to the ground.

Oh great, out of all the people in the world...

Alexis

Tylerwas standing there with his group and was getting closer and closer to thesidewalk. How could that lady back there tell there was trouble coming? How didshe think pushing us out into the trouble would help us get away from it?

"Go away." Tyler and Iwere having a stare down and the look he was giving me was more than amused, helooked a little surprised.

His eyes widened andboth of his hands raveled into fists. He looked at me, then Zach, like we had four eyes.

"There are two aren'tthere? You have two of them," He said slowly.

Neither of us saidanything but Zach stepped back and pushed me back with him.

"Well if you have twoI'm sure you don't need both of them. I'm sorry for what happened before." Thecrazy look on his face dropped and his fake amused one took its place.

"I had never used aknife like that before and I had seen it in the movies, I just got carriedaway. Can you forgive me?"

I just glared back athim angrily, but part of me was confused. Dad must've paid him a lot if he madesuch a complete personality change.

"Tyler, you need toleave. I know what you want and you can't have-." Before I could finish, one ofthe guys standing behind Zach pulled out what looked like taser, aimed it at Zachand then he stumbled back.

"Zach?" I reached forhim so he wouldn't fall the ground and he fell in my arms.

He looked up at me, his eyes were filled with pain and he gripped his stomach like he had beenshot. This scene looked to familiar. 

"What did you do?" Iscreamed at Tyler.

Zach was becoming tooheavy so I lowered him to the ground and he just laid there. As much as I hatedthat and had the worst feeling about it, I didn't really have a choice. I stoodup straight and started to walk towards Tyler.

"Relax, relax, he won'tdie. It was just a little stun gun. He may have broken a rib or two but hereally isn't in that bad of shape. The shot will just exaggerate the pain isall," He shrugged.

"You bastard- Tyler whatdo you want from me? All this magic shit, how is this helping you in life?" Iexclaimed getting closer to him. 

"Have you noticed howthe streets are dead and silent now? I did it. Just a little 'magic shit'. Butif I have your Sun God stone, I can make it last as long as I want to. Maybeforever."

"What did you do? Wheredid all the people go?" I was about four feet away from him and didn't want torisk getting any closer.

"Oh they're still here.It's just like they're waiting above the clouds. Any time I feel like it theycome back and continue their lives, not know anything that happened. Speakingof the dead streets, how's your little adventure into the unknown going?Rebelling against your dad, I like it," He grinned evilly at me.

"Don't even bring my dadinto this conversation. You just need to go and leave me alone." I snapped.

"Oh but Alex, Mr. Brownwas such a nice man. So was his money." Then stepped closer to me, spun mearound and slammed his arm around my throat.

Under the normalcircumstance I wouldn't care if he called me Alex, except for the fact the Zachwas recovering from the stun gun more quickly than I would've liked it. He wassitting up now and was watching us.

"Alex?" he said my name,looking at me confused.

"Oh what's this? Youhaven't told your new boyfriend the truth have you? Tsk, tsk." Tyler was havingtoo much fun with this.

"What are you talkingabout?" Zach stood up slowly and besides the lack of oxygen entering my body,my heart was racing.

He wasn't supposed tofind out like this... or ever.

"Well Zach, that's yourname isn't it? This beautiful girl here has been lying to you. See her nameisn't Valerie Green. That's just the name she uses on her phone. And whateverstory she told you about her family isn't exactly true. Her mother is dead,"the way he said that word made me want to cry, "her dad is top notch businessman who keeps her locked up in a house all the time, and she doesn't live withher aunt and uncle. Her real name isAlexis Brown and her pretty little face is the key to all your problems," He grinnedand held my neck even tighter.

Now the tears started to silently fall from my eyes. Zach was staring at me with a mix of pain, confusion, and hesitance. I could tell he was at a loss for what to do.

"You lied." It wasn't aquestion, it was a statement.

"Zach, I-I have to explain.P-please." I choked.

"Shh shh Alex. Notalking. I know how stubborn you are so I have a feeling I won't be gettingthat stone out of you. I'm sure Zach is willing to hand his over." 

I started to shake myhead, then I felt and painful stab in my side. I wasgetting dizzy and could barely keep my eyes open. Tyler let go of me and I dropped tothe ground. What a happy ending.
