Chapter 10

“I’m dressed you slow poke !” I said to spencer and giggled.. She was currently straddling me because I was telling him he needed to get ready for dinner.. Which was at six. Its currently 5:52.. He leaned down and kissed me and I kissed back immediately.. He pulled back and I couldn’t help the little wimper that escaped my lips..

“go downstairs and finish helping my dad.. I’ll be down in a few” he smiled and kissed me once more then let me up and I went downstairs.

“hey.. Need any help ?” I asked walking into the kitchen. Jack looked up and smiled warmly

“yeah.. Uhh could you just finish setting the table ? I’m finishing the chicken now” he smiled again and I smiled back and nodded

“sure” I picked up four plates, four forks, four glasses, and four napkins and carried them to the table setting out the places.

“what time did your mother say she’d be here ?” jack yelled from the other room

“uhm… she should be here soon.. I text and told her to be here for six and she said okay.. Soo..” I could only hope she’d be there on time.. Sober..

“alright great !” I could almost hear the smile in his voice.. He’s been wanting to meet my mom for a while.. He says ‘if your mother is half as polite or kind as you are, then she’s definitely worth meeting’ my heart swelled with how much spencer and his father loved and cared for me.. Shone in two different ways of course but it was still love.. And its one thing I’ve been deprived of for a while. My heart still had a dull ache settled in it.. But it went from completely unbearable.. To bearable.. Jack brought in the chicken and noodles for chicken parm we were having for dinner and layed them in the middle of the table and I went in and got the pitcher of iced tea.

“mmmm foood !” spencer said walking into the dining room from the stairs.. He sounded like a zombie that just walked into a room full of healthy, juicy, living, humans. I smiled and gave him a quick kiss and took my place next to him at the table.. He reached for the spoon to get some chicken and his dad slapped his hand away.

“aught ! Nope ! Not until everyone is here..” he pointed a stern finger at his son and I couldn’t help the small smile that creeped onto my face.

“uhm.. I wouldn’t hold up the whole dinner for her.. It would be a waste..” I said quietly..

“nonsense ! We’ll wait 10-15 minutes.. If she isn’t here we’ll start eating.” he smiled at me and I nodded.. He was so kind and had a warm attitude.. It was contagious too.. every time you were around him you caught his mood the common cold.. I liked being around him.. Spencer was like that too but it wasn’t like his dad.. It reminded my of my father.. Everyone loved him too.. Or loved being around him. The dull, bearable ache started to throb in my chest and I think the color faded from my face as it dropped..

“are you okay ?” spencer whispered to me putting a hand on my arm. I looked up and nodded smiling.

“yeah.. Why wouldn’t I be ?” he gave me a weird look but just nodded

“okay.. I was just wondering..” he said and went back to fiddling with the hem of his shirt..

20 minutes passed and my mom didn’t show.. I figured she wouldn‘t.. I just wish mr. Thompson didn’t make all this food. I really didn’t want it all to be wasted.. I looked up and he frowned a little but then smiled again.

“well.. Shall we eat ?” he said and we served ourselves and started eating. We were immediately consumed by laughter and random stories.. A typical family dinner..
