"You can't be such a sour puss all your life, baby. You got to learn to live and love living!" Rochelle screamed as Ant drove us down towards Area 51 on Saturday night. I've had a long week and was pretty tired of being sad all the time, so when Ant invited me to hang out with Rochelle and Jamal, I couldn't pass up the offer.
"Rochelle, sit down! Damn." Her boyfriend, Jamal, said as he pulled her down. "Always going buck wild, why can't you just chill out for once?"
"Jay, you're such a sour puss. You can't be —"
"Oh shut up and kiss me." He said, bringing her in for a long and rough kiss. Ant glared at them through his mirror and made a barfing sound. "Ant, shut up and drive." Rochelle pulled from the kiss and stuck her tongue out towards her cousin.
Ant and I laughed from the front seats and paid attention to the road. A few minutes later, we arrived to our destination and Ant shut the car off. His cousin and her boyfriend hopped out and practically ran towards the entrance door while Ant and I stayed seated. He looked towards me and gave me a small smile.
"So no fights this time, right?" Ant asked, grabbing my hand and giving it a soft squeeze. I laughed and nodded.
"Of course not. I don't know what came over me last time; I'm not usually like that." I explained. "I'll try my very hardest to not get into a fight this time."
Ant laughed and nodded his head. "Okay, let's go. Drinks are on me."
We walked into the club and immediately went towards the bar. We grabbed two seats next to each other and waited for a bartender to cater to us. "What can I get you?" Our bartender asked. I looked towards Ant for him to order, but when he didn't I decided to order it myself.
"Can you get some Henny and Ciroc and mix it up? Thanks." I said. The bartender raised his eyebrows and looked back.
"Those are top shelves. They'll be more expensive." He explained. I shrugged. Money meant nothing to me at the moment. I just wanted to have fun. He went to make our drinks so I talked to Ant while we waited.
"Having fun yet?" He asked. I smiled and nodded.
"It's been so long since I've been happy, Ant. Thank you for this." I said.
"I'll do anything for you." Ant said. He brushed aside the hair that had fallen over my face. I noticed he was leaning towards me, and I would've kissed him to had Rochelle, who was already drunk, not came between and yelled in our ears.
"Guys this song is amazing!" She slurred. "Is there a song as amazing as this? I think not!"
Ant laughed at his drunken cousin and shook his head. "Where's Jamal?" He asked. Jamal was still on the dance floor, however, talking to some girl who seemed to be sobered up. Rochelle just shrugged and turned around to see Jamal and the girl. She frowned and crossed her arms.
The sober girl and Jamal wandered towards the bar where we were and she smiled. I recognized her as the girl from my job, the new one who was still in training. "Are you Rochelle?" She asked. Rochelle slowly nodded with her pout still evident on her face. "Jamal was crying for you." She laughed, "You know when a child loses their parent? That's how Jamal cried for you."
Rochelle stopped pouting and smiled widely. She wrapped her arms around Jamal's neck and gave him a tight hug. "Jamal, I missed you!" She squealed although they were literally apart for five minutes the most. He laughed loudly and picked up his girlfriend and twirled her around. "Oh em gee. Let's go to the roof, Jamal! Let's go, let's go, let's go!" She suggested before tugging on his arm. He was too out of it to even say no, so he followed.
"Ant, shouldn't we go up there with them?" Ant shook his head and shrugged it off. "But they're drunk. What if one of them falls?"
"Well if one goes, they both go. Less work for me and more gas in my tank." I gasped and covered my mouth. "Kidding! I'm kidding, babe." He said. "But if it makes you feel any better, I'll go with you to the roof."
"How come I worry more about your own cousin than you do?" I asked unbelievably. Ant shrugged and thanked the bartender as he returned with our drinks.
"I dunno but at least someone's worried about her. She's a wild one, but you wouldn't be able to tell by her behavior when she's sobered up."
"Isn't that the best way to be?" I asked with a laugh.
"Yeah, if you think about it, I guess."
We took our drinks and went to the roof where Rochelle and Jamal were. They were talking for a while and Rochelle was looking up at the sky. The look in her eyes were so indescribable. Even though she wasn't in her right state of mind, it was like she was sober enough to tell what was naturally beautiful and what was amazing.
There was a twinkle in her eyes that never ceased to exist. But what was even more beautiful was the look on Jamal's face when he looked to his right to his beautiful girlfriend. The smile he had every time he saw her face was so outstanding. The look was so ... amazing, that I was almost jealous.
"They're fine," Ant said after seeing how his cousin and Jamal were acting on the roof of Area 51, "let's go back downstairs."
"No, wait. Wait. Look." I said as I watched them in awe. "They're so beautiful. You'll never see a love like this, ever. You see how he looks at her. It's like he absolutely positively loves her." I said, "Must be nice."
"What?" Ant asked.
"Having somebody look at you like that. Like they really love you." I explained, because for some reason the love that was shared between the two of them was absolutely remarkable and envious. They loved each other like they'd grown up together and just naturally fell in love. And I was jealous of that because I didn't have that type of love in my life anymore, if I ever even had that type of love. Must be nice.
"You'd be surprised how loved you actually were, Slim. You don't know how loved you are until you're either sick or dead, and it sucks but that's how life is now." Ant said, "I'm sure your true love is closer than you think. Or maybe he's someone you overlooked."
I smiled at him and gave him a friendly hug. "Thanks for that, Ant. I love you, you know that? You're like the brother I never had." I said.
