Gilbert jerked awake. His head was killing him and the dim light in his room was enough to make him force his eyes shut. He reached up and groped at the wall till he found the switch and turned off the lights. He could still see that he was surrounded by beer bottles. Forcing himself off the ground, he looked in the mirror to see that he hadn't shaved in a while, their were bags beneath his eyes and his shirt was unbuttoned to his mid chest.
"What a wreck."
He laid down on his bed and stared at the ceiling.
"Perhaps I could sleep and dream of her sweet face again."

"Race you to the tree!!"
"Hey no fair!"
The two children flew to the willow tree between their homes and dropped their school bags beside the tree. Gilbert bent over to catch his breath. When he rose he saw Elizabeta staring at him with a little wooden sword pointed to his face. She smiled at him smugly.
"Gotcha."
Gilbert stared at her, wide eyed. He was slightly impressed with her swiftness although he'd never admit it. In fact he was quite impressed with her in general. He didn't know why though. Something about her green eyes, and the way she wasn't afraid of bugs like the other girls at school left a little knot in his stomach. And for some reason, he wanted to fight as hard as he could for that kiss. He then fell out of his trance and smirked at her. Reaching behind him he pulled out his toy sword and took a swing for her side.
"Hey!" She laughed a bit. She had always been ticklish there.
"I think I got you!" Gil taunted. Lizzie hit him in the leg causing him to lose balance. Lizzie laughed.
"So much for being awesome." Gil rose to his feet. And started swinging at her again. She ran and giggled.
"What was that? I couldn't hear you over the sound of my victory!" Gil shouted back. The two children laughed chasing each other with bruised up legs. Each little bruise had a story, most of which they couldn't remember, but they still kept track of the amount each of them had. The one who had more would get the others cookie at lunch that day. The two were inseparable. They did everything together and it had always been that way. Gil couldn't imagine life without Lizzie. He swung at her again and she fell over. He tackled her, tickling her to keep her on the ground. She laughed so hard her sides hurt.
"Gil-Gil please stop." She begged between laughs.
"One. Two Three!" Gil released her, claiming victory over their little battle. They lay under the tree side by side.
"How about that kiss?" Gil teased.
"Gross! There's no way I'm kissing you!" Gil laughed, but he did feel his heart sink a bit.
"You are pretty awesome though." Lizzie said shyly. Gil sat silently and looked at her in shock. She started straight up with a faint blush on her face.
"Lizzie! Gilbert! Come wash up for supper." It was Gil's mom. They usually had supper together. Gilbert stood up and offered a hand to help Lizzie, both of them red faced and embarrassed. Lizzie took his hand and he pulled her up. Neither of them let go. There was no sound except for the breeze and the birds. In a quick awkward mess, Lizzie leaned forward and pecked him on the cheek.
"R-race ya!!" She then ran inside as fast as she could.
"Wha-??!" Was all Gil could muster. The blood rushed to his face and he put his hand where she planted the kiss. He tried to deny the smile forcing itself onto his face, but he couldn't help it. Before he knew it, he was grinning like an idiot as he slowly walked up the porch steps to his little blue house.
