I look up to see a young man smirking at me from across the net. The edge of the net is in his hand and I see he was the one who flipped it. "Glad you had fun." he teased after I had removed the smile from my face.

"An Amity girl, not only turned Dauntless, but the first to jump?!" A girl with dark hair walks towards me from the other side of the net and leans forward to examine my face as if she was testing whether or not I'd flinch or move back. I did neither and instead stared at her, noticing her eyebrow piercings over her brown eyes. "Well I'll be damned." She added and stepped back, returning my personal space to me.

"Guess there's a reason she left, Lauren." the young man says. "What's your name?" he asks as he drops the net in his hand. Out of habit, I open my mouth to say "Olivia", but I stop myself, remembering what Hazel said about the name not being Dauntless enough. I think of the suggestions she gave me, but I didn't like either of them. I jumped to my middle name, but ended up at my last name, Maxwell.

"Max." I answer firmly. "My name is Max."

"Make the announcement, Four." Lauren, the dark haired woman said to the young man. He looks over and shouts,

"First jumper: Max." he called. As if they had appeared from thin air, a crowd formed around the net as I heard the impact of another initiate falling into it.

"Hazel." the man Lauren had called "Four" greeted flatly as I looked into the net to see Hazel, whose face was engulfed in her platinum blonde hair.

"What, you're not gonna help me out?" Hazel said to him alluringly. Four responded by rolling his eyes and flipping the net like he had done to me. "A real gentlemen you are, Four." she said and lifted herself off the ground and came to stand by me. We backed up and watched the rest of the initiates fall into the net, than be helped out by Four and Lauren, without to net being flipped over again. Once all the initiates were back on their feet, Four directed us to follow him and Lauren through a narrow tunnel. The walls were brick and the tunnel was inclined, making it feel like we were traveling down into the earth. I walk with Hazel and Nicole as we followed closely behind Four and Lauren, ahead of the rest of the group. The herd stopped and Lauren turned around. She was standing between Four and Chris, who were both also facing us.

"The Dauntless-born initiates are with me. I trust you don't need the grand tour?" The Dauntless-born initiates chuckled and followed Lauren in the opposite direction of where the group was facing. Hazel and Nicole both waved goodbye to me and I returned the gesture. After they had left, there were only nine initiates remaining. There were no transfers from Abnegation and I was the only Amity. There were three Erudite initiates and the rest were Candor, which surprised me. It takes guts to always speak your mind, I guess. After Lauren and the Dauntless-borns had left, Four turned to address us.

"I usually work in the control room, but for the next few weeks, I'm your instructor." he began. "My name is Four."

"Like the number?" I test and he raised his eyebrow at me.

"Exactly like the number." He confirmed.

"What happened? One through three were taken?" I asked with a cocky tone.

"Something you'll learn quick is keep your mouth shut." He said and began walking away. We followed him as he continued. "We're going to the Pit, which you will someday learn to love. It--"

"The Pit? Clever name." I said sarcastically. Four turned around again and leaned his face intimidatingly close to mine.

"I'm sorry, did you want to lead this tour?" he snapped. Unable to help myself, I smirked at him and put my index finger on his shoulder, gently pushing him away from me.
