The refusal or unwillingness to accept something or to accept reality

She didn't want to admit it. She didn't even want to think about it, but the reality is that he's slipping away. Maybe she never even had him at all, but it feels like she did, it felt like whatever they had was real and genuine and special.

We still have a chance.

She refused to let them go without a fight. She cares so much about him and she still doesn't realize that he doesn't care at all. She doesn't notice that their old conversations where they would talk for hours were replaced with awkward head nods, shy hellos, and a simple wave. He found himself asking her icebreaker questions as if they were strangers when he ran into her on the streets.

"How have you been?"

She still doesn't notice that what they had is completely different now. A little part of her knows that they're doomed, but she can't afford to think like that. She mustn't lose hope; she believes in miracles, shooting stars, magic, she believes in everything and everyone. She's too naive to realize that things aren't going back to the way they used to be.

"Why are you acting like we haven't talked in weeks? We talked just yesterday."

Everything is fine. Everything has been fine. Everything will be fine, she doesn't doubt it. They just need to communicate and talk more and everything will continue to be fine, maybe things will even be great. There's nothing wrong with their relationship as she would say, but there's so many things broken in their friendship as he would say. She has to get her head out of the clouds and stop dreaming because it's only breaking her down and completely destroying her in the long run.

"Are you sure? I can't recollect our conversation."

As she sees him glance at his phone and smile at what someone who isn't her said, she knows they're slipping, that's simply the reality. As she walks away from him, she feels something breaking inside of her. Maybe it's her heart but she could've sworn that he already broke that. Before she turns the corner and leaves him standing there all alone, she turns around to give him one last look. What she sees somehow surprises her; he's already gone.
