It had been five days, and Sam was still grieving the departure of his dear friend.

His companionship with Mister Frodo was no doubt the greatest bond he had ever shared with someone, although he was unsure of what to call his connection with his former master.

Had it been a friendship? If so, it was the greatest friendship that ever could have existed between two hobbits. A romance? Perhaps, but Sam was keen on believing that it was some mix of the two; 'friends' did not seem strong enough to describe the union between the two of them and 'romance' was a bit inaccurate considering neither had confessed feelings, although both hobbits did indeed harbor feelings toward the other.

What, Sam wondered, would become of Bag-End now that Frodo was gone? He certainly didn't want those awful Sackville-Bagginses to inherit the lovely place. Maybe Pippin or Merry would begin living there, he hoped. Sam would certainly be content in serving the jolly Masters Merry and Pippin. Not as happy, never quite as happy though, as when he had served Mister Frodo.

Either way, Sam decided that he should at least make the place presentable, no matter who eventually moved into Bag-End, and resolved himself to visit the next day.
