50 years had passed since Frodo had left, and although time had helped Sam recover, it still hurt to walk into Bag-End without his dear Master Frodo.
Sam had moved into Bag-End about a month after he had found the letter and had lived there happily with Rosie and their children. But now, Rosie had been gone for the past five years and both of his offspring had begun lives of their own.
One afternoon in Spring, just when the daisies were beginning to bloom, there was a knock on the door of Bag-End. Puzzled, Sam stood up from his reading chair and went to the door. He was not expecting visitors.
The door creaked open to reveal a slim hobbit with dark, curly hair laced with the grey of age. He wore a forest green cloak and when he looked up into the face of old Samwise Gamgee, a pair of piercing blue eyes were revealed.
Sam took a shuddering breath and cautiously stepped forward.
"M-Mister Frodo?" He choked out, barely whispering, hardly trusting his eyes.
"Oh, Sam" the elder hobbit replied with a smile, as the two old friends fell into each others arms.
Practically weeping, Sam invited the dark haired hobbit into his former abode and proceed to make tea for the both of them, just like he had when they were young.
They comfortably settled into the armchairs that they had used long ago, and smiled at one another when they realized that not much had changed between them. Same Sam and Frodo. Same unbreakable friendship. Same undeniable love.
The next hours were spent reminiscing about the past and sharing their more recent experiences. Frodo learned of the death of Rosie and the marriages of Sam's children, and Sam was told of the dream-like place where Frodo had resided for the past half century.
It was not until long after midnight the the subject of the letter arose.
"Did you-" Frodo coughed "Did you find my letter?" he asked hesitantly.
Nodding, Sam lowered his head and fixed his gaze on his feet. A blush crept across his face and the tips of his ears turned bright pink as he addressed the topic that both hobbits were avoiding but eager to know about.
"You said you loved me." he stated timidly.
With a small sigh, "Yes. I did." Frodo replied, unsure of what would happen next.
"Why?" Sam whispered, barely audible, his voice breaking.
Puzzled, Frodo repeated his friend's statement. "Why?"
Sam slowly raised his gaze to meet Frodo's. "Why did you love me? I'm just a gardener. I'm just... Sam."
Frodo's heart broke as he stood and took the few steps to the chair Sam sat in, resting his hands on the arms of the chair so that he was bent slightly over the blond hobbit.
"Why, Sam?" He asked, incredulous "Because you are the most loyal and generous hobbit to ever have lived. The kindest, most gentle, sweet, beautiful hobbit that I have ever known. My dearest Samwise, you have stood with me through the best and the worst of circumstances. Your bravery and loyalty is unrivaled and memories of time spent with you were often the only source of my hope while I was away. You were, and continue to be, the most important thing in my life, Sam. And I am completely and irrevocably in love with you."
And with that, Frodo leaned down and pressed a tender kiss to the lips of the stunned hobbit.
Sam looked up in wonder at his former master, as tears began to fall from his weary eyes. Frodo began to worry, but Sam put a quick end to that.
"Just some happy tears, Mister Frodo, is all these is." He said with a soft smile. "In all my years of hopin' and prayin', I never thought that you would love me. But I loved you, Frodo, more than anything, and to see you go away... when you left..." Sam once again dissolved into tears.
"Oh, my sweet Samwise" Frodo cooed. "I never should have left you. I never wanted to leave you, but I had to. It was the hardest thing I have ever had to do and I have missed you every second since I stepped onto that boat."
A small smile. Another delicate kiss.
Frodo gathered Sam into his arms."I'm here now, my love. And I will never leave you again."
