ONE MONTH LATER

Football season had ended, their respite was short lived as hockey season started today, Adam was stuck working which meant it fell on Kim.

She waited in the living room for little Adam to be ready to go, Dani had a play date Sean Roman's little girl Megan.

She checked her watch again, they had to be at the rink in thirty minutes and she knew they should have left five minutes ago if they wanted to be on time.

"Adam, come on. We're gonna be late" she called out to him, sighing when he didn't respond.

"Adam, let's go" she said as she pushed the door open, surprised to find her son sound asleep, she knew he wasn't a hundred percent. He had been having fevers off and on the last month and the doctors couldn't find a reason for them.

They claimed it was viral.

She was beginning to grow concerned, he'd gone to bed without dinner the previous night which was alarming in itself.

The boy could eat a grown ass man under the table, he often consumed more than Adam did.

She felt his cheek, disappointed to find him feverish again, "Adam, honey wake up, she gently shook his shoulder.

His eyes opened slowly, "Sorry, I didn't mean to fall asleep" he said as he slowly sat up, "I didn't miss hockey did I?"

Kim frowned, "I'm sorry baby, no hockey today" she told him, "your fever is back"

He pounded his fist on the mattress, "but today's try outs, I won't end up on a good team if I miss try outs" he fought the tears he felt forming in his eyes.

Kim rubbed his shoulder, "I'm sorry Adam, but you're still sick. You don't need to be in the cold rink and playing hockey. I'm sure you'll end up on a good team" she stood, "come eat something"

Adam laid back down, "I'm not hungry" he told her as he turned the television on, "this stinks"

Kim turned the light out, she could see it in his eyes that he'd be asleep again shortly, "I'm sorry, buddy"

"S'alright" he mumbled as he channel surfed.

Adam was shocked, "He's sleeping again?" He asked incredulously as he finished off the plate Kim had saved for him, "did he eat much?"

Kim folded her arms across her chest, "Not a thing, barely touched his lunch" she explained, "he's complaining that his joints hurt too, I think I'm going to make another appointment. Somethings not right with him, he still shouldn't be running fevers"

Adam could see her eyes begin to glisten and his heart constricted at the sight of it, "Hey, come here" he leaned back so she could sit in his lap, "I'm sure he's okay, try not to worry. Tell you what I will come to the appointment with you, okay?"

She nodded, "Yea, I'm sure I'm being paranoid"

"Stop that" he told her. "You're the best mom in the world, you aren't being paranoid. Just making sure our boy is okay, nothing wrong with that" he kissed her cheek, "How's Dani?"

Kim touched the faded bruise just under his eye, shivering at the memory of him explaining how he got it. She knew she owed Kevin for saving his ass yet again, "She's good, she hung out with Megan today. Those two are inseparable"

Megan Roman was a sweet kid, Adam liked to joke questioning if she was actually Sean's kid because she was so sweet. She was happy that Sean was able to rekindle his romance with Jenn.

"Lord help us both when they're teenagers" Adam already planned on adding to his gun collection when the time came.

They sat in the exam room, Kim's nerves on edge.
