Adam paced, it wasn't the news he wanted to hear.He should have been beside her when it started not sitting on a bar stool drowning his sorrows and ending up on his brother's couch.
The brother whose nose he had just broken, if his mother was still alive she would be furious with him.
He sighed when he saw his father approach, "Hey Dad" he shook his hand, his father quickly pulling him in for a hug.
"What's the latest?" Bob asked, wringing his hands together, "how's grandpa's boy?"
Kim smiled at her father in law, he and little Adam had an amazing bond, one that she had come to depend on. Bob spending many hours at the hospital with little Adam so she and Adam could spend time with Dani.
"They took him downstairs" she told them. She wasn't sure how long she had been sleeping when Adam awoke screaming in pain that his back hurt, he actually shook from the pain.
The doctors rushed in and started pushing morphine and another medicine she had yet to learn how to pronounce.
All she wanted was her husband to wrap his arms around her and tell her everything would be okay, but he wasn't there, and he wasn't answering his phone.
She clutched the necklace hanging from her neck, "they're doing a PET scan, they think it may have spread to his spinal fluid" she told them, her heart was heavy.
Adam groaned, "Kim, I don't know what to say" he approached her, she had been giving him the cold shoulder, he knew he deserved it. Just didn't make it hurt any less.
"Nothing you can say, you should have been here Adam, been with us" a tear escaping no matter how hard she tried to keep them at bay.
Her need to be comforted by him outweighed how angry she was with him, "I'm so scared, Adam"
He quickly pulled her into his arms, "Me too baby, I'm not leaving your side again, I promise" he whispered in her ear as he placed soft kisses on her cheek and neck.
Dr.Miller had warned them that this could happen, that their son's body wasn't responding to the chemo as well as they would have liked, they had started to discuss the next steps.
One Adam wished they wouldn't ever need, one he didn't even want to think about.
If the tests came back that the leukemia was now in his spinal fluid, it would leave them no choice.
They saw Dr.Miller approaching them, his face said it all no words needed.
"Shit" Adam mumbled as Kim collapsed in his arms, her cries filling the hallway.
They hadn't thought of him once in the past seven years, and now they may need him.
"It's time to start thinking about a bone marrow transplant" Dr. Miller told them after ushering them in Adam's vacant hospital room, Adam still in the PACU, "I know you don't want to, but it's time to notify Adam's biological father"
Adam felt his stomach drop, the last person he wanted to contact was Jeremiah Miller.
