Chapter 4-

I wake up to the dogs next door barking, I swallow trying to smooth my throat but it doesn’t stop the sandpapery feeling in my throat. I look over to my alarm clock and groan. It’s only 1 in the morning. It hasn’t even been 5 hours since Jack, Alyssa and Luke left.

As much as I hate it, I’m really starting to like them all. The human part of me is saying to keep them close and be friends. But the vampire part is saying to leave them and not get them in any kind of trouble. Even talking to someone at school can get them killed but knowing that I still keep going.

Careful not to wake Ben and Seb I make my way down into the dimly lit basement. I crawl through the hidden door in the back of the hallway cupboard. I wanted somewhere to hide things that no one else can find and this was the best place I could think of. It’s also handy for a hiding place in case something goes wrong.

I quickly make my way down the wooden creaky steps and into the cement room. I know it’s cold in here but being a vampire I don’t feel it. Sometimes you miss the cold. It’s like the saying goes, ‘you don’t know you have until it’s gone.’ I guess that goes a lot with my life.

I open the fridge we keep locked up down here and pull out a blood bag. In a second flat the tops ripped open and I’m sucking the contents from it. I look into the mirror on the opposite walls while I’m drinking and look at the red eyes staring back at me. It’s a vampire thing; when we drink or the vampire side of us is more in control our eyes turn as red as fire. It’s even painful for the human eye to look at.

Once I’m finished I throw the empty bag away and in a flash I’m laying back in my bed. For an hour or so I just lay there staring up at my plain while ceiling thinking of everything. After I left my family I had to come back after a week just to see how they were coping and my prediction was right. Dad had already started drinking, at first it was once a week and eventually it became every day.

I snap out of the memories a while later and look over to the clock. The digital lights read 2:24, I’ve been laying here for over an hour and without a hope of going back to sleep. I sigh and run my hand gingerly through my hair. Without thinking properly I stand up and make my way to the window where I have a clear view of the house opposite ours. Somewhere in that house Luke sleeps.

Maybe I should check up on him? No I can’t that would put him in danger. Yeah but I’ve already put him in danger now and the least I can do is check up on him once in a while to make sure him and his family is safe.

Using my vampire speed I quickly run into his house and into his room without triggering any alarms. I end up at the end of his bed, watching him as he peacefully sleeps. It really is different when everyone sleeps. I guess it’s the only time the weight on your shoulders seems to disappear and you can dream of anything.

No one can tell you otherwise and no one can tell what you’re dreaming about. I close my eyes for a second and picture my mother’s smiling face, my father’s rough yet calming voice and my two precious sisters with their arms tightly around each other. In my dreams is the only place I can see them again, hear them again and all together be with them.

A whine pulls me from my thoughts and within a millisecond I’m at Luke’s side. He begins to flash around in his sleep and I begin to panic. What is happening to him? Is he having some kind of nightmare or is he having an attack of some sorts? I’ve never really had to deal with any of them before.
