Epilogue-
*Sam’s P.O.V*
I look around the yard, at the smiling faces of the children. My pride and joy stands there laughing with our little girl Bertha, she’s six years old today. I never had to worry about anyone growing up in my family before but now that I see it, I can’t believe it happens so fast. It’s been two years since we got married, four since we met. Before we adopted Bertha something was missing. We could tell we needed something more in our lives.
Now we’re here at her sixth birthday and time seems to be catching up to us. In a matter of years, something that didn’t matter before, she will grow up and move away. We agreed that we would not change her no matter what the circumstances. The day she’s on her dying bed though, we will kill ourselves. No parents should live longer than their children.
Luke turns his eyes away from Bertha, towards me and throws me a smile. I lazily smile back. Everything seems to be working out for me. As he turns back to Bertha I catch a glimpse of red in his eyes. No matter how I look at him there seems to always be a red tinged there.
Someone pulls at my pants and I look down at Seb. He’s still four but really nearly 100 years old.
“What’s wrong, Seb?” I ask.
He smiles, “When can we cut the cake?”
I look around the yard again one last time before answering. “We can cut it now.”
“Yay.” He screams and in a matter of seconds he’s bouncing away towards the cake. An 8 year old Jackson following him closely. Even as they grow apart they’ve stayed close friends and I have no doubt that they always will be.
I make my way towards the table as do the others. Arms wrap around me from behind, pulling me into a solid chest. They begin to nibble at my neck causing me to laugh. A few days after we were fully mated he found out I was ticklish on my neck and now uses it for his advantage.
I notice his mother looking at us and quickly push him away. “Not here, we’re at our daughter’s birthday party.” I scold quietly.
“Later then.” He says solidly, leaving no room for arguments.
“Slade, will you do the honours of lighting the candles.” I say in a British accent. What? Don’t look at me like that. Just because I’m one hundred and four doesn’t mean I can’t be funny.
Slade shakes his head but takes the lighter anyway. Carefully he lights the candles and everyone begins to sing. Once again I look around at the smiling faces of everyone. Ben, Seb, Bertha, Jack, Slade, Luke and Alyssa. We’re one big family.
Bertha just blows out a candle as a smile forms on my face. This is my life now, and it’s great.
