Chapter 20

Mackenzie’s mother showing up after more then ten years wasn’t easy to take but she knew deep down it didn’t excuse what she was doing, the fact she was letting Dean touch her. He was a great kisser, sweet and intense. She felt his heart racing against her chest as he pinned her against the bathroom wall.  She kissed him back liking the fact if she was kissing him her mind didn’t think about anything else. Her hands gripped his shoulders, pulling him closer even as there was no more space to close.

His hands just didn’t move under her shirt to cop a feel, he pulled the whole thing off baring her gray shorts bra. As the kiss broke she looked into his eyes, they were so dark and wild, just plain sexy. Dean was a good looking guy, anyone could see that but she had never thought he was sexy before.

Not caring about anything at all except the comfort he offered Mac reached for him and the kiss started back up, his hands finding her breasts.

“Hey Dean?” It was Jake, his voice acted as a big glass of ice water.

Dean jumped off Mac and closed the bathroom door softly before his cousin found them. “You caught me at a bad time; dinner isn’t sitting well with me.” He sagged against the door.

Jake laughed. “Good luck with that. Listen Mackenzie’s Aunt just stopped by looking for her, any ideas where she might go?”

Dean met the girl’s eyes in question. “No.”

“I’m going to go help look for her, call me if you think of anything.” He left the room.

Dean kept his eyes on Mac and watched as guilt completely took over her expression. Reality was a bitch. “I’m such an idiot.” She said softly. “He is such an amazing guy and I’m in here risking that with you.” She said with disgust, mentally chastising herself for letting it get that far. She picked up her shirt from the floor and rapidly shoved it over her head. “I have to get out of here.” She moved to the door but he was blocking it, her expression grew nasty.

“Everyone is out there looking for you. I’m thinking the last thing you want to explain is why you’re jumping out of my window.” He said tightly. He was angry, no he was furious. It wasn’t supposed to happen this way; she wasn’t supposed to keep hating him and damn Jake for interrupting.

Mac grew silent and not a minute later she exploded. “What the hell was all of this? Just another way to stick it to me, to make me and Jake break up? You are unbelievable. I hate you and I never want to see you again.” She had said it all before but this time he believed it, ice dripped from her voice.

Dean wasn’t letting her leave. “You kissed me back and no this time you cant say it was an ill advised reaction or some bullshit. You kissed me back and not five minutes ago you made the first move.” He wasn’t sure of much but he knew he couldn’t go back to how it was. He couldn’t keep lying and neither could she.

“It was stupid and wrong and if I wasn’t having a really bad day it never would’ve happened. You could’ve been anybody.”

Dean scoffed. “Yeah Mackenzie Ashby known for making out with random guys. Why are you having such a bad day?” he knew the answer but besides wanting to kiss her he did want to help.

Her tears resurfaced as her mind went back to the subject of why she’d be stupid enough to let Dean of all people comfort her. The sadness all over her face soon snapped to realization. “You called her.” She accused in a soft whisper, there was no one else in her life that would make such a bold move. “You know the truth.”  When Dean didn’t jump asking questions of what she meant she knew she had guessed right. “How could you….?” The warm drops of tears rolled hastily down her cheeks.

“Yeah I did call her after I found out you lied about your parents being dead to confirm if it was true.” Dean confessed. “I was pissed off at you for blackmailing me and then all of this with Jake but I didn’t want to hurt you like this.” Deep down all he had planned was to use the information against her so she’d back off and leave Jake but never this; he never wanted to see her cry.

Mac scoffed. “Right because why the hell would you want to hurt me? I mean hell you’ve been making my life hell for years by hurting me with your little group of friends and looking down on me but no,” she dragged out the word, sarcasm at its highest. “you wouldn’t want to hurt me, of course not.” She finished softly as she looked into his eyes. “You’re gonna regret this.”

“You can’t tell anyone about Megan.” She was the only one he had to protect, after that he didn’t care for Mac’s threats.

“I wouldn’t do that because in the end it’d hurt her and it’s you I have a problem with, who I’ve always had a problem with.” Her tears dried, her jaw set into a tight line as the ice princess returned. She picked up the soap dispenser on the counter and tossed it at his head. The ceramic shattered into pieces, she dashed out of the room when he moved out of the way from the heavy object.

With the coast clear Mac left out the window and through the backyard of her aunt’s home.

Dean was an idiot, a fucking idiot he thought. The original plan would’ve worked out better but he had dropped the whole thing because he didn’t want to bring up past painful memories but like most aspects of his life lately the plan blew up in his face in the worst possible way. He never thought the woman would actually show up, hell she abandoned Mackenzie for years why would she actually come? His thoughts were interrupted as Megan started to cry. He cradled his daughter in his arms. “I’m surprised you didn’t get up earlier.” He thought of the broken soap dispenser all over the bathroom floor. “I really messed up now baby girl. She’s never gonna forgive me.”

The next morning he saw Mac at school and he knew whatever chance they might’ve had, whatever breakthrough they had on the road to friendship was completely gone. She looked at him with hatred anytime their eyes met. She refused to talk to him directly at practice. Everyone chalked it up to their usual animosity but Dean knew the truth. With each passing day it got worse instead of better. She made good on her promise, he regretted hurting her every passing day and nothing he tried eased her fury aimed solely at him.
