Chapter 25
Mac really needed to pee. She stood waiting in the hall for the last ten minutes. “Hurry up.” She groaned while waiting for Dean to finish with his shower. As her bad luck would have it he made it to the bathroom just as she was waking up. It hadn’t been easy getting to sleep with Dean lying right there but eventually she succumbed to her heavy eyelids. Megan came around the corner. “How long does daddy’s shower take?”
“Awhile.”
Of course they would, Mac thought, Dean seemed the type to waste too much time on his appearance. “Did you finish all your breakfast?” she asked the little girl next.
“Yes. You look ready to burst.” She said, noticing the way Mac held her legs closed.
“I am sweetie.”
“Don’t think of oceans or running water. A girl at school told me that.”
“Smart girl. Do you have a lot of friends?” Mac thought about her early years, there had been no friends; her mom was in and out. Mac remembered feeling lonely a lot. She didn’t want Megan to feel alone or like there was something wrong with her the way Mac always had and continued to.
“Kelly, Franny and Ashley but Kelly is my best friend.”
“No friends that are boys?” she asked, teasing.
“No boys are gross.”
The bathroom door opened and Dean appeared with a towel around his waist. Mac found herself staring at his wet chest and then quickly turned away. “Yes they are,” she said to Megan. “Very gross.” She remembered she had to pee, badly; she pushed past Dean and whispered. “You’re lucky she’s standing there. You knew I was waiting.”
Dean chuckled as she shut the door in his face. “What were you talking about?” he asked his daughter.
“Boys, Mac thinks they are gross too but not you daddy, we like you.”
“Thanks, go finish getting ready and put on clean socks.”
Mac felt much better as she left the bathroom and walked back to the bedroom to get dressed, then she didn’t feel good anymore. Dean still wasn’t wearing a shirt. This was a stupid problem, she thought as she kept trying to look away. He wasn’t in good shape, he was in amazing shape. He must go to the gym to have muscles that defined. He wasn’t bulky; he was lean with just enough muscle in all the right places. The word chiseled kept popping into her head.
“I don’t like be ogled at.” Dean said, just shy of laughing.
Mac felt the heat rush to her cheeks, she picked up a pillow and flung it at him. “Bite me.” She growled. “We have to come up with a better plan for the bathroom.”
“I didn’t make you wait that long.” That gained him a heated glare. “Ok you can do what Megan does; she’s in and out while I fix her breakfast, get in after her.”
“Or you can take shorter showers. You don’t need almost a half hour. Soap up, wash your hair, rise off and get out. Fifteen minutes tops.” She disappeared into the closet and glanced around for something to wear. It was Friday; three more days to lounge around and get into some sort of routine before she started her new job Monday.
“About the wedding,” Dean left the question in the air.
Mac groaned and turned back around. “What about it?” her stomach turned into a knot any time the W word was uttered.
“We decided to do this in six days and we haven’t talked about it once.”
“What’s to talk about? We’ll get a marriage license and then we’ll go to the justice of the peace and then it’s done.” She tried not to make a face; she was still trying to wrap her mind around the whole being married thing.
“A lot of people do that but we should put some effort in and maybe take some pictures.” Dean suggested as he sat on the bed.
She understood his point; the court couldn’t suspect it wasn’t real. “Make an effort how?”
“Dress for the occasion. I’ll rent a tux and you can wear a dress.” Before he finished his sentence he saw her face scrunch up, he glanced at the closet. “Do you own a dress?”
“No.”
“That doesn’t surprise me.” He grabbed her hand before she could reach for another pillow to hit him with. “At least you aren’t trying to hit me with bathroom ware.”
And just like that, an off the shoulder comment and her heart started to hurt. “New deal; you don’t mention that day ever again.” She tried to pull her hand free but he held on.
“Why because you don’t want to remember what we did?”
“You always give yourself too much credit. The kiss meant nothing but I’d rather not remember how big of a jerk you were to me and all the reasons I should let you fry.” Mac didn’t let herself get emotional, she cried those tears out along time ago and it was probably the only reason she could be in the same room with him now.
Holding onto her hand Dean pulled her closer until she collapsed in his lap. “Damn it Dean let me go.” He held both her wrists.
“I said I was sorry and I’ll say it again, I’m sorry for what happened. I never meant to hurt you.”
“It doesn’t matter.” She groaned, avoiding his green eyes.
“It does matter. Yeah we did a lot of stupid shit to each other and sometimes we went too far but I never wanted to make you cry.”
“Yeah well you’re good at it.” she confessed softly.
He ran his fingers through her hair, resting his hand at the nape of her neck. “Mackenzie.” He whispered, staring into her sad eyes.
“Are you gonna kiss her?” a young voice was interested in knowing.
Mac jumped away as if someone poured ice down her back. “Megan! Hi. You guys should get going before you’re late for class.” She ran her hands nervously through her hair and moved toward the closet, wanting to lock herself inside.
“We’re not done talking.” Dean said.
“Sure we are, we can talk later.” Her voice sounded too high in her ears, it was official; she was freaking out.
Dean stood from the bed. “Will you be here later?”
She thought he was talking about his lunch break and then she saw his eyes and realized the question was much more serious, he was asking if she was going to run away while he was gone. “Yeah I’ll be here.” She looked away from his intense probing green eyes. “Have fun at school Megan. I really should get dressed.” She glanced down at her pajama pants and t-shirt then made what she hoped wasn’t a suspicious exit into the closet.

“Why didn’t you kiss Mac goodbye?” Megan asked once they were in the car.
“Because she wasn’t feeling good.” Dean hoped that would satisfy her questions. He tried to focus on the morning rode and not the memory of Mackenzie in his lap. It was tough. Her body had been warm and soft, he liked how she responded when he touched her. He had been waiting for her to pull away. This wasn’t apart of the plan but the plan was completely out the window. He had really believed he could stay away from her, banter as they normally did and nothing ever come of it but if Megan hadn’t interrupted them he would’ve kissed her. He wanted to do a lot more then kiss her.
“Daddy, dad? The light is green and green means go.”
“Sorry.”
