Chapter 33

Holy shit, Mac laid in bed thinking; she agreed to date Dean Chandler. She knew times were different and now he was this amazingly sweet man that put his child first no matter the cost but she still couldn’t forget the past. She agreed to date him but that didn’t mean she forgave him. It wasn’t so much the act, bringing her mom to town, it was the fact he was willing to stoop that low to hurt her, the fact he wanted to hurt her that deeply. Mac couldn’t shake the fear that he’d hurt her again and worse because now her heart was invested.

Turning on her side she watched him sleep, he was beautiful and more so now that his soul was starting to match his good looks. Adult Dean was someone she liked a lot, someone she didn’t mind helping or kissing but teenage Dean was still there, you couldn’t get rid of the past.  She didn’t want to stay angry at him over it; she hoped their agreement to date and get to know each other as more would help ease the painful weight of the fear on her chest. She wanted to trust him.

She picked a bad night not to get any sleep, in a few hours she had to report to work for the first time. But no matter how hard she tired her eyes wouldn’t stay closed.

Basketball would always be her true passion but when it came time to find something to do after high school shooting hoops wasn’t going to cut it.  After months of sulking around the house Aunt Kate made the choice for her. At first Mac resented her aunt, who wouldn’t after being forced to work as if she was still a kid that had to go? But after the first month Mac didn’t mind working at the firm and found unlike high school the real world had some interesting aspects, the people could truly be nice and helpful.

Mac had worked under Belinda Sterling, cooperate attorney, and when Belinda was offered a job with the sister firm she wanted to take her favorite assistant with her. Mac had first declined the offer because she was actually happy at home and knew if she took the offer she was bound to run into Dean. Through the grapevine she had stayed up to date with what Dean was doing, the city he lived in, the school he was accepted into by scholarship, the whole nine.

Belinda had been a good boss and again Mac had liked working with her. After a week of giving it serious consideration she packed her bags and joined Belinda. Thinking about it Mac would invite her to the wedding, that would give her four guests. When she arrived in town she stayed in Belinda’s guest room and after the third day she decided to pay Dean a visit. Mac had wanted to see him on her terms and not run into him in a very awkward moment and she had also wanted to talk about the custody trial.

At first glance maybe it had been a big mistake going to see him considering she was entering a sham of a marriage and her whole life was turned upside down but when really thinking about it maybe it was a blessing in disguise.

Some point around three that morning she fell asleep only to be shaken awake at seven. “No.” she kept her eyes closed and pulled the pillow tighter.

“If you don’t get up now you’re going to be late.” Dean said softly around her ear.

“Five more minutes.”

“Funny Megan just told me the same thing. If you don’t get up now you’re going to miss your chance in the bathroom.” He rubbed his hand up and down her back. “Or we can save time and water if you shower with me then you can sleep a few more minutes.”

“Get away horn dog.” She moved away from him and tried not to laugh or give into his touch slipping under her shirt.

“You’re the one who won’t get up and when you’re late to work you’ll blame me,” his kissed the column of her neck. “and we can’t have that.” His tongue and mouth started doing wonderful things against her skin.
