I woke up and rubbed my eyes, confused of where I was. I instantly remembered I was in Yamba. I also remembered what happened last night which can explain my pounding head. I checked my phone to see the time was 9:48 am and that I had a text from Matty
From Matty:
Hey Im working today, come round and keep me company.
He had sent that 3 minutes ago
I replied to him with a smile
To Matty:
Sure would love to :) be there in bout 30 mins
I pressed send and went downstairs. Nana Joy was sitting in the kitchen eating. I said good morning and got out some breakfast.
I told Nan that I was going out that day and she gave me $10 to buy some milk and bread.
I walked outside and felt the hot, humid air on my skin. It would've been about 38°c (100°f). I slid my sunglasses onto my face and headed towards town.
-------
I arrived in town bout 10 mins later and went into Matty's work. It was a cute little bakery with pies, sausage rolls, donuts, bread and other yummy stuff. He must have been round the back so I just rang the assistance bell. In no less than 2 seconds Matty swung round the corner, smiling as he recognised me. He was wearing the same uniform from yesterday. It was a black shirt and a white apron, topped off with his SnapBack. I couldn't tell what pants and shoes he was wearing because of the stand of food in front of him. His light brown eyes sparkled with excitement.
"How ya going Kyles?" He asked
I grabbed a loaf of bread for Nana Joy.
"Im good. Your in a happy mood." I replied while paying him for the bread. I took a seat at the little table and chairs inside the bakery.
"Im happy cos now I can talk to someone. How was ya head this morning?" He asked with a cheeky grin. He knew the answer.
"Killed. How did you get up so early to work?" I asked curiously.
"Didnt sleep. But I went for a surf bout 7 so that woke me up a bit" he said chuckling.
The door swung open and a very tired looking Tim was standing there. His sandy hair was dripping and he was holding a board.
"Ay Matty, come to mine after your shift yeah? Brodes and Dane are coming over."
"Why do you guys speak like such bogans?" I asked while giggling.
"Oh hey Kyles, ya wanna come too?" Tim asked.
"Yeah sure" I said smiling. I have only met these guys for one day, but they treat me like they have known me for ages. I have this bad habit of trusting to easily, so I agree to things I probably should wait a bit before agreeing, but hey, It's a hard habit to fix.
"Okay well see you two later" Tim said. He turned around and left the store. Leaving a wet sandy puddle in the door way where he was standing. Well he didnt waste any time.
--------------------------------------------------
At 12 Matty had finished his shift. We walked down the footpath on the side of the harbour towards Tims place. I have never been there before but Matty said that his parents work in Coffs Harbour which is about 3 hours from Yamba so his parents are never home.
I kept scuffing my converse on the ground as we walked, its a habit. That would explain how I get holes in the bottom of all my shoes.
"Can you stop that?" Matty said
