The Sandbox Locket part 9:

(Liam's POV)

I can't believe Luna would hurt me like this. She had just admitted that she loved me forever, and she refused the ring? I decide that something else is going on.

(A few minutes later)

Niall opens the door to his house in Ireland, pale as a ghost. "Liam," he croaks, "Luna was chasing after you and--and--" he breaks down in tears.

Suddenly in rage, I shake Niall. "Niall, what happened!?!?"

He looks up at me. "She got hit by a bus."

Without a word, I get in my car and speed away to the nearest hospital. When I get there, the paparazzi are waiting as usual. I push past them and go to the information desk. "Where is Luna Quimby? This is an emergency."

Normally, the hospital isn't allowed to tell information like this to the public, but the woman must see the fear in my eyes, as she shows me the room number.

When I get up to Luna's room, I am in shock. She is hooked up to IVs and a breathing tube is hooked up to her bruised face.

The doctor comes in and gently places a hand on my shoulder. "Mr. Payne? Miss Quimby is in critical condition. We have reason to believe that she is in a coma. She has 6 broken ribs, a broken tibia and ankle, and both arms are broken. In addition--"

I start crying. "This is all my fault!" I wail. "If I hadn't rushed out of the hotel--"

"Mr. Payne, I suggest you just wait outside and I will call you in as soon as she is in good enough condition."

(Several hours later)

Mrs. Quimby joins me on the couch with a tearstained face. She can barely look at me. A few minutes later, we are allowed in. Luna is completely bandaged up, and we are told that she is indeed in a coma. "We don't know if she will ever wake up," the doctor tells us.

(Nearly 2 weeks later)

I have come to visit Luna every day, trying to be cheerful as I describe the day's events.

Today when I come in, the doctors look optimistic. "We tried a new drug on her that has proven to help coma patients wake up," the lead physician informs me.

I go over to Luna and hold her hand. Suddenly, I feel a faint squeeze. The doctors are looking at her increased heart rate. As I pray that this is not just a hoax, I feel another, stronger squeeze, and Luna opens her eyes.
