I had just come from the boys' locker room where I had changed into my gym uniform. The navy blue shorts and grey shirt were nauseating for me to look at, but I had no choice but to wear them. I wore a shirt under my grey one to cover up my arms.
Hazel finished changing at the same time I did.

"Okay. Some things to know before we go out there," Hazel whispered once we were out of the locker rooms. "Clarisse La Rue, that girl you fought at lunch? She's in our class. She's going to be on the lookout for you. Be. Careful. Don't get in her way, don't get embarrassed, don't get killed. Got it?"

"Well, I-"

"Good. Let's go." She pulled my arm and stomped out the door, where Coach Hedge was waiting on the field for everyone to change.

He was short, with a trimmed beard, and was holding a megaphone that occasionally yelled Moo! for some reason. He always stood and walked in an awkward way, almost horse or goat-like.

Hedge blew his whistle. "Alright, cupcakes!" He yelled, as the rest of the kids filed out onto the field. "Here's what's going to go down. You are all going to give me 5 laps around the baseball field! But don't get tired, because then the real fun starts!" He shouted with a smile. "You got it? Okay, go, go, go!!"

We all ran around the baseball field 5 times. I thought for sure that I'd be exhausted when we finished, but I was actually one of the first to finish, along with Jason and Clarisse.

"Okay," Hazel says, out of breath. "That's finally over. Now we get to do fun stuff!"

Coach Hedge blew his whistle again. "Alright bring it in!" We all gathered in a huddle. "Congrats, to Grace, La Rue, and-what's your name, kid?" He looked at me.

"Nico di Angelo," I answered.

"And di Angelo," Coach finished. "Okay capture the flag time! You all know the drill, just get into your lines so I can put you on a team."

Please don't put me on the opposite team of Clarisse..

"Grace, red! La Rue, blue! di Angelo, red!"

No. Nico says no.

"Levesque, blue!"

"Wish me good luck," Hazel sighs.

Hedge does this for every kid in class until we're separated into even teams.

"Ok, you can start now," he said, sounding bored.

People from the blue side were already trying to run and get our flag. I scanned the blue team members. Most of them were bigger than me. I was probably quicker. I'm gonna take that chance.

Once no one's looking, I jog quietly to the blue team side, and grab their flag. No one notices-until I don't look where I'm going and knock into Clarisse.

"Hey! Guys, get over here!" Clarisse yelled to her team. I sprinted for my life. Chris Rodriguez was on my tail. He was getting closer. Now he was 3 feet away.

Now a foot away.

An inch away.

He lunged and tackled me.

"Nico!" Hazel yelled. I was fine, but of course, Hazel didn't realize.

Being a good sport, I accepted defeat. When I stood up, everyone was staring at me.

"What?" I asked.
Hazel walked up to me and pointed to my head,"I think Chris might've given you a bruise."

I touched my forehead and gasped. No. This cannot be happening.
The bruise wasn't from Chris, it was an old bruise from Melissa.

I smoothed my hair down over it.
"Uh, yeah, I guess he did," I covered. Hopefully Hazel hasn't known me long enough to see through my lies.

Hedge blew his whistle."Rodriguez, to the office! Sadly, this is a non-contact sport, cupcake."

"No, Coach Hedge, it's cool. I'm fine," I told him.

"You're sure?" He asked. "That big bruise on your head says otherwise."

"I'm sure."

"Okay, fine. Get your tail back here, Rodriguez!"

I whirled around, to go back to my team's side for the next round, and found myself face to face with the most beautiful boy I've ever seen. It was Will Solace, from literature class this morning. I immediately lost my cool.

"Oh," I say, oh-so-cleverly.

"Hey, nice run back there. I'm Will," he said, holding out his hand. He looked even better up close.

"Thanks, I-I'm Nico." I caught myself staring at his muscle when we shook hands. I quickly looked away.

"Well, uh, see you later," he says. We walked past each other, and when he wasn't looking, I stole a glance behind me.

For goodness sake Nico, stop eye-raping him!

Dang, he was hot. But I know it can never happen. What kid wants to date a pale, scrawny guy with cuts and bruises all over him? Remembering that, I tugged on my shirt sleeves, making sure they were covering my forearms.

Hedge blew his whistle again. "Next round! Mooooo!" He said through his megaphone.

-----time lapse------

"So do you guys do that every class?" I ask Hazel, while we walk down the hallway.

"No, only when Coach feels like it. He was being generous today," Jason told me. Then Hazel grinned excitedly.

"You guys ready for myth class?" She asked.

"Heck yeah, I'm ready," I answered. If Will Solace will be there.

Question of the Chapter: What is your favorite sport? (I'm an ice skater, so I guess I'll say that.)
