"Nico, you're not going to school."
"Will, I'm fine."
"Dude, no you aren't."
"I know what I'm doing. This isn't the first time this has happened."
"But it's the last time. And it will only be the last time, if you get some rest."
"Will, we've only known each other for a day! Why do you care so much?"
"Because, I....want to be a doctor when I grow up, so this is good training."
"I'm going," I decide, getting out of the bed.
Despite yesterday's events, today didn't feel any different. I was sore when I woke up, but that wasn't new. I haven't woken up normal since I was, like, seven. I'm frustrated with Will for being so nice, and I'm frustrated with myself for letting Melissa have the last laugh all of the time. Once I was in the bathroom, I locked the door, sat on the counter and rested my head in my hands.
What am I doing here? I ask myself. This isn't some new tragedy. Get up, di Angelo.
I reluctantly listened to the voice in my head. Since I stupidly forgot to bring my clothes in here with me, I guess I'll have to go back out and face Will. But when I opened the door, it wasn't Will standing there.
"Oh, um..hey Hazel,"I said. Of course, in that moment I just had to be wearing my pink boxers. But they were skull-print, so I haven't completely lost my masculinity. Sexist, I know. But they're comfortable, so I don't care.
"Hey. Can we talk?" Hazel asked, kindly averting her eyes from my underwear.
"Sure,"I said.
We sat on the edge of Will's bed and Hazel asked,"Are you okay?"
That's it. She drove all the way here to ask if I was okay.
"Yeah, why?"
"Because of yesterday."
Please leave me alone.
"What happened yesterday?" I asked.
"You know what happened yesterday."
I walked over to my pile of clothes and fished around for a shirt. I slipped it on over my head and said to Hazel,"No, I really don't. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to get to school."
Nico di Angelo does not need help.
Hazel sighed, but gave up. "Okay. I guess I'll see you in school then. Do you need a ride?"
"Yeah, a ride would be great, actually,"I accepted.
Okay, sometimes. Sometimes Nico di Angelo needs help.
"I do have to pick up Frank on the way there, though. You okay with that?"
"Sure. Thanks."
"Anytime."
She walked out of the room and left me alone to rummage for some pants. Today, I guarantee that there will be endless questions, concerns, and comments. But I have a plan to deal with them all, and my first victim today was Hazel.
(Okay, so not a very good chapter, but then again, you guys aren't the ones who have to get up so freakin' early tomorrow for band practice.😩)
