I get there, but there’s no sign of him. There are just so many people I can’t even look hard enough. I walk around aimlessly. I doubt he’s even still here after two days. I take shelter for the night. In the morning I’ve walked around the lake a million times, but I’ll go once more. Then I’ll head to where I saw him when I was on that date with Jake. I feel something push me to the ground.
I roll down a hill. I get up once I’m down. I feel blood trickling down my face from the bushes I hit. I’m probably scratched up everywhere. I look up to see what happened. Then a group of eight boys maybe eighteen emerge from the crowd. I grab my knife out of my boot.
They smirk and circle around me. I’m just praying they won’t pull a gun. As long as they don’t I can stand a chance. I flick my knife open, but conceal it in my palm so they can’t see it. One smirks evilly and reaches out for me. I grab his hand twist it backwards and kick him away. All of the guys stare at me shocked.
I figure this is my moment to run. I lunge in one direction, but a guy moves in my way. I push him, but go tumbling down with him. They pick me up and throw me behind the bushes. I land in the prickly bushes and feel all of the edges cut into my skin. One jumps on top of me before I can get up.
I try to free myself, but I can’t. He’s too strong. I still have my knife under my sleeve, but I can do any damage without being able to move my arm. “You can pick from any freaking girl and you pick a fighter?” one of them asks the one who’s on top of me.
The guy on top of me smirks. “Yeah, but she’s not a screamer and she’s so damn sexy.” I spit in his face revolted by him. He wipes it off with his hand. I let the knife slide down and I swing at him. He dodges, but rolls off of me. I run for my life, but I hit something hard and fall back down.
I’m getting weak by now. I know I’m losing a lot of blood which is making me worse, plus not being on the streets for a year and a half has kind of lost most of my skills. I also haven’t had food and water in a while. They pick me up and hold my arms and legs. One grabs my knife and holds it to my throat. I don’t know what to do now.
So I go with the pathetic excuse. Scream. “Jett!” I scream at the top of my lungs. I don’t know why I screamed his name, but I’m not thinking. “Jett! Help!” I scream again. The guy presses the knife harder to my throat. I stop. I’m running out of options and time. I hear gunshots. I close my eyes and start to shake.
The guy drops me, but I just stay there unable to go anywhere. I’m paralyzed by weakness and fear. I feel someone grab me and run. After a while they stop and set me down. I haven’t opened my eyes the whole time. I’ve been much too scared. “Hope, you’re okay now,” says a familiar voice.
I open my eyes to meet Jett’s gray ones. My fears suddenly start to disappear and I engulf him in a hug. He hugs me back. We stay there in silence. For the first time since I was fifteen when they pulled the gun tears flow down my cheeks. “I found you,” I manage to whisper.
He smiles and looks at me. “You need to save your energy. Don’t talk.” He turns around. “We’ve got to stop the bleeding,” he says urgently. He suddenly takes off his shirt and takes my knife. He cuts it up into strips and wraps them around many areas. He smiles at me. “You’re okay,” he repeats. “Rex and Shark went to get food and water and as soon as the bleeding stops you’ll be fine.”
I nod. He holds me in his arms like I’m a little delicate flower. I might be at this point. A few minutes later I have plenty of bread and water. After I eat and drink I fall asleep.
I wake up and stretch my arms yawning. There’s a slight pain as I do so. I look over at a group of guys who are talking. “What happened?” I ask. Jett emerges from them and sits down next to me.
He smiles at me. “How are you feeling?” he asks. I shrug. He nods. “Well I heard someone screaming my name. The guys thought I was crazy, but I knew I wasn’t. We saw you and those guys, so we shot them all and got you.”
I smile. “You did that for me?” I ask. He nods. I kiss him, but everything aches and I pull back. I give him an empty smile. He returns it. “You know that’s a little illegal?” I ask giggling.
He laughs. “Honey, I piss on the sidewalk and it’s illegal.”
I smile. “Defacing public property,” I whisper. He holds me carefully and kisses my cheek. I wince.
He sighs. “Sorry.” I nod. “Hope do we need to get you home?” he asks. I shake my head. He looks at me confused. I yawn and close my eyes. Maybe I could get a few more minutes of sleep. I was still tired and weak. “Hope?” he asks. I open my eyes. “You weren’t with anyone?” I shake my head. “What were you doing here all alone?”
I smile. “After I saw you the other day I couldn’t eat or sleep. I finally realized that I couldn’t take it anymore. All of the things came crashing down on me and I finally chose. I chose you, Jett. You!”
He stares at me in shock. I press my lips to his and we kiss for the longest time we had ever. I ignore the pain and kept kissing him. We pull back and rested our foreheads against each other. He looks away. “You can’t do this to yourself, Hope. You said so yourself. There’s only one good thing and a million bad things about being with me and reversed to.”
I sigh. “Those two reasons, the good one about being with you and the bad one about not, are more important to me than anything else.” He smiles and kisses my head where there aren’t any cuts. “I love you more than anything Jett. I just want to be with you.”
He holds me close. “I love you more,” he said staring into my eyes and smiling. He held me close in his arms. We stayed there staring into each other’s eyes, smiling, and kissing for the whole day. It was the perfect moment. I never wanted to be anywhere else but his arms again.
