I woke up to a loud knocking at my bedroom door. I groaned in frustration before getting up to open it.
"Took you long enough! I've been knocking for five minutes." My friend Bonnie exclaimed.
"Why didn't you come in through the bathroom like you always do?" I ask her.
"Because I accidentally walked in on your totally hot-shirtless brother. He was all tanned and I was all tongue tied so I got out of there as quickly as possible." She replied. I rolled my eyes at my best friend. She just chuckled in response.
"Just tell him you like him already! You guys would be perfect together." I yell as I search my closet for an outfit. I pull out some grey sweatpants and hold them up for Bonnie to see.
"You're going to wear sweatpants your first day of junior year!?" Caroline exclaimed as she walked through my bedroom door.
I shrugged at her, "I don't see why not, it's just another year in hell."
"Preach!" I heard my brother say from his room.
"¡Cállate, Manny!" I yell back. I dig through my closet until I find my favorite pair of ripped fitted skinny jeans and my favorite pink chiffon bow tank top. I hold that up to Caroline and Bonnie and raise my eyebrows looking for approval. When I see Caroline grin from ear to ear I start getting dressed.
"How come you and Manny speak fluent spanish even though your mom and dad is black?" Caroline questions for the millionth time.
"Escuchas, por favor!" I say as I grab my keys and book bag before leaving my room Care and Bonnie in tow.
"I am listening Av." She says walking behind me.
"Both of my parents are Hispanic! You can be black and Hispanic. Mis padres son de Colombia. Ellos son Afro-Colombianos. ¿Comprendes?" I elaborate.
"Oh by the way I made coffee and not the last part, no." I shake my head at her chuckling.
"She said, 'my parents are from Colombia. They are afro-Colombian. Understand?'" I hear my brother Manny say as I reach for mugs out of the cabinet. After I'm finished pouring coffee for everyone I look over and see Bonnie and Manny sharing a moment by the fridge
"¡Ay noo! ¡Yo como aquí!" I yell in mock disgust. I laugh as Bonnie quickly moves away from Manny's towering figure.
"C'mon gals. Let's get'er done." I say in the best country accent I can as I place my mug into the sink.
We all leave the house Manny locking the door behind us. Today was our first day as upperclassmen at Mystic Falls Highschool. I tried to be all giddy about it like Caroline was but I just wanted it to be over with already. Two more years to go, I told myself as I pulled out of the driveway. Two more years to go.
--------
"Come. On. Ava." Bonnie said as she pulled me towards Mystic Falls High. Caroline had run off into the building to find Elena Gilbert and now Bonnie is trying to drag me into this hole.
"Noo. Bon let me go to the stoner's hole and hit a blunt like five times!" I yell whispered to her. She threw her head back in laughter letting go of my arm.
"No if you're high you can't cheerlead OR be on the volleyball team. Now get your ass in that building!" I huff at her pouting my lip and stomping into the building.
We make the long walk to my locker and when I get there I see Matt staring at the one and only Elena Gilbert. I get a little agitated and stomp over to him as Bonnie goes over to Elena. I poke his chest hardly with my boney finger.
"Stop moping over Elena, Matty. Pull up your pants, put a smile on your face and show her what she's missing! Make her miss you and when she wants you back take the dagger out of your heart and put it in hers. You can do so much better."
"She just lost her parents Av. She'll need some time." He looks at me with those sad blue.
"She's had all summer master her fake smile. No one batted their eyelashes when I lost my father. Hell I never even had a mom." I have to control the volume of my voice. My eyes widen at what I said.
"Ava I get it but I love her, I can't let her go that easily. And that was a little harsh even for you." He replies shutting his locker.
"I know I didn't mean it like that! I just- never mind I'm gonna go send my condolences or whatever people do." I don't let Matt say anything as I walk away.
"Are you alright? How is she?" I hear Caroline say as she pulls away from the hug with Elena.
"She's right here, ya'know?" Elena says tiredly, "I'm fine, thanks." She smiles so fakely. Losing your parents is a giant pill to swallow.
"Hey, Elena." I say as I approach them, "I'm sorry for your loss."
"Thank you. I really appreciate that." I smile at her and not the fake ones I usually give her.
I see her look over my shoulder and I look behind me to see what's going on. I frown when I see Jeremy go into the bathroom eyedrops in hand. I hear Elena sigh and just before she past, I put my arm up to stop her.
"I got this one Elena." I say as I march into the boys bathroom. I push the door open with a lot more intended force.
"Woah dude this is the boys bathroom." Some guy at the urinal says as he hurried to zippen his pants.
"Woah puta, you don't have anything I haven't seen." I heard Jeremy snicker as he put his head back ready to put in the eyedrops
"Nice one Av." He says. I smack the eyedropper out of his hand.
"What the hell Ava? Please don't turn into Elena." He says.
"Look, I'm all for hittin' the blunt once in a while but you've got to cool it, Jer. Coming to school high is a huge no-no. Plus I can smell it on you those eyedops won't do anything for you." I nag to him. This is my first time being a stick in the mud with him but something tells me this isn't the first time he's heard this. I turn around to exit.
"Oh and one more thing, you better get over this little funk fast because people lose sympathy for you real fast when you turn to drugs to cope." I say over my shoulder to him before I push the door open. As I turn the corner to go to first period I run into a wall. A really firm but soft wall. I look up and I'm greeted with a gorgeous pair of green eyes.
"Um. Isn't this the boys restroom." He says raising his eyebrows. I chuckle.
"Yeah. Never seen a girl exiting a restroom? I didn't use the urinal if that eases your mind." I send him a wink before walking in the opposite direction he's walking in.
"Oh god, I'm going the wrong way!" I announce to myself. I turn around to see green eyes walking away, "Hey, Emeralds. I didn't catch your name."
"Uh. It's Stefan." He says with a smile.
"Nice to meet you Stefan. I'm Ava. Are you new to town?" I question.
"Yeah. I uh, lived here when I was younger but my dad was in the military." He said as we approach Tanner's classroom.
"Oh well, welcome back. Bienvenidos." I said as he reached in front of me to open the door.
"Miss Santiago. Nice of you to join us." Mr. Tanner said as I walked into his classroom. I gave him my best sarcastic smile so he'd know how happy I am to be here. Note the sarcasm.
