Chapter 1 – The List

It’s the last two days before my 18th birthday and I’m absolutely petrified to say the least. I’m becoming an independent adult now, and I’m stepping out into the big bad world all by myself.

Celebration plans are in order for tonight, and with the help of my brother it will all hopefully workout. The door suddenly opened to my room.

“Oh, hey mum what’s up?” I question looking up at her from my list. I could tell that this was a big day for her as her eldest child is now independent and is leaving her behind. That’s the thing though, I would never leave her behind, and she’s my mother the one who helped me through everything the one who took over both parenting roles when my father just took off. She just has to understand that.

“Nothing really, just checking to see what you’re up to and if you’re okay.” She says as she takes a step forward towards me. She looks over at my shoulder and down at the list I’m currently working on for the party tonight.

“Well it seems like you have everything under control. I’ll just be down stairs if you need anything.” She then takes a step back towards the door and opens it slowly waiting for my response.

“Yeah, I’ll shout out if I need anything.” I turn back towards my desk. I then continue to tap my pen on the desk, creating a sort of beat to help me think.

2 Days Later ---

“Oh you look gorgeous honey, spin around for me.” My mum says as I take a step out of my wardrobe. I had decided that for my birthday, I would do a simple small party with all my closest friends and family. Easy enough, right?

“Hahaha, okay.” I start to spin for her. I decided to wear a maroon long sleeved lace dress that goes up to my knee and puffs out a bit. It’s quiet a beauty.

“Alright, well everything’s ready downstairs so all we got to do is just wait for the guests.” Mum says as she steps out of my room. I sit down on my bed. This is really it I’m turning 18. I look around my room, at all the photos, the memories. I get pulled out of my thoughts when my mum yells up the stairs to come down for a second.

I then stand up take one glance around the room and make my way downstairs. I find my mum and find out what she wants.

“Can you just take out the rubbish for me? Thank you darling.” I take the bag from her and open the front door and walk over to where out rubbish bins are. Then a car drives up right next to me and parks and out comes my best friend Maddy.

“Hey, come on in.” I gesture her towards the house.

“Hey birthday girl, how does it feel to be the big 18?” She questions as we make out way up towards the house.

“I don’t, it hasn’t really hit me yet if you know what I mean?” I tell her as we get to the front door. Something stops me short. There’s an envelope sitting on the step.

“What’s that?” Maddy asks as she bends down to pick up the envelope.

“No don’t touch it.” I yell at her. I knew what this was, my blood started to run cold and a chill ran down my spine. It said…
