Chapter 13: Homecoming
North Campbell University’s football stadium was packed with students, professors, alumni, family and friends, cheering on the football team as they played the Homecoming game against Morgan State University.
During halftime, the band got out on the field to perform. Dream and Tyree went to the concessions stand to get hot cocoa while Epiphany sat with Cynthia.
“That hot cocoa is going to be good when the boys finally get back,” Cynthia said to Epiphany.
“Oh, yeah,” Epiphany said as she rubbed her hands together. It was a brisk October afternoon. She was looking around the stand while trying to keep warm.
“Are you okay, Epiphany?” Cynthia asked.
“Oh, yeah! I’m fine, Ms. Cynthia.” Cynthia could tell that something was bothering the girl but she didn’t press the issue. She just slid closer to her and put her arm around Epiphany. Epiphany was actually feeling very paranoid, like someone was watching her. She kept on looking over her shoulder, thinking she would see Lorenzo or even A.J. It was Homecoming and anything was possible.
Dream ran into Calvin at the concessions stand and the first thing he asked Dream was, “Where is Epiphany?”
“She’s sitting with my mom in the stands. Row F-B.”
“Oh, your mom’s here?”
“Yeah. She is. She actually graduated here.”
“So are you going to come back with us? We could use some help with this stuff,” Tyree said.
“I can help,” Calvin said. “Plus I want to speak to Epiphany and meet Dream’s mom.” Tyree looked at Dream and smiled. They knew what the deal was now that Calvin was free of Sophia Cole. Tyree handed Calvin the cup holder with four hot cocoas and they headed back to their seats
Epiphany was surprised to see Calvin walking with the boys. He approached them and handed her the hot cocoa and she distributed each cup amongst them.
“I just came by to see how you were doing, Epiphany,” Calvin said.
“I’m fine, thanks for asking,” Epiphany said, not even looking at Calvin.
“Why are you always so mean to me?” Calvin asked.
“Calvin…I just really don’t want to be bothered with you or anyone who associates with AKSO. Nothing personal against you.”
“Wow. Okay,” Calvin said.
“Oh, yeah. Mom, I’d like you to meet Calvin,” Dream said. “Calvin, this is my mother, Cynthia.”
“It’s nice to meet you, ma’am.” Calvin shook Cynthia’s hand. “you and Dream could pass for twins.”
Cynthia smiled at Calvin’s remark.
“Well, people have mistaken me for his sister,” Cynthia said with a laugh.
“It was nice seeing everyone. Guess I’m going to head back to my row. Can’t leave the frat for too long,” Calvin smiled at Epiphany, then waved at everyone else.
