It killed me to watch her run away into the unknown fear of her own household. I knew she would be safe but I couldn't rest until I was sure myself. I walked home a bit of ways until I noticed something on the ground, it was Verie's bracelet with a golden heart on it. I knew it was from her mother because her mother told me .

I turned around and started walking towards her house again to return the bracelet. The night quickly surrounded me like a cold blanket which made me nervous and afraid of what would come. My feet made a pitter patter like crushed cookies in a blender and it filled the open air of silence.  I pulled my jacket over my shoulders tighter as the cold air danced around me, even though it was August, it was very chilly at night. The first real sign of fall.

When I finally approached Verie's house, all the lights were off and it looked as if no one had previously lived in it or lived in it now.  The white picket fence was closed and there was a spooky aura around the house. I slowly creeped up to the door and hesitantly laid a heavy knock on the door. Suddenly, the house came to life and a dim yellow light flooded through the house. The door swung open with a  creak. Verie came to the door and rolled her eyes once she saw it was me.

"Oh , what do you want" Her eyes watery from the tears I had made her feel. I am such a monster, why would you ever do that to a girl?

"You dropped this Guinevere", it was the first time I had said her full name and loved it. There was something unique about her and her being here. Not many people move to our small town but I was blessed that she had. I then gingerly handed over the bracelet and looked at her shaking hands, something was wrong.

"Are you okay?", I asked and carefully reached out to her. She flinched away and ran back into her house but left the door open. After debating whether or not to follow her, I let myself in and found her on the couch.

" Sorry there was just somethings said when I came home that I have let affect my actions", she stated in the most professional way a crying girl could, "I came here because the doctors said I had a little over two years to live but the cancer was not growing." I was shocked, how could something so beautiful be dying on the inside? She then nestled inside the crook of my arm and sobbed some more.

"Xander, I don't know what to do or if anything is right or if I am even handling this right. I am breaking on the inside and it's slowly eating me away.", She cried harder and I wrapped her in my arms and bundled her up inside my warmth. Before I knew it, I was petting her hair, rubbing her back and whispering sweet nothings into her ear.

"It will be okay, everything will be fine", I cooed as I held her tighter. This is not how I imagined a first date but I was grateful that she opened up to me.

"Verie, you are strong and beautiful, nothing can stand in your way." And with that, she actually hugged me back. We sat there in the darkness of her living room and soaked up her sadness and mine. As the night continued, we fell asleep in each others  arms.

I am so lucky.
