Chapter 21

"Victor, you will do the concert tonight whether you like it or not," my father growls at me, holding me by the collar of my shirt.

I don't know why I continue to take this abuse from him. My mother refuses to do anything about it for fear he will divorce her and she will lose her social status. She simply turns a blind eye to the way he treats me and the way he treats her.

Sometimes I wish they would have dropped me off with my uncle when I was a baby and never looked back. I don't hate playing music, but I do hate being forced to play. My uncle never forces me to do anything. He allows me to follow whatever interests I have and does everything he can to help me learn about them.

He works for a company called Microsoft. They are growing in popularity and he is always bringing me to work to help feed my interest in technology. I have learned a lot from the company and I love hanging around the offices, watching everyone work.

"I am done, father," I mutter, pulling his hand off my collar. "I will not play again for you or anyone else that tries to force me."

With that, I turn and leave the house with no intention of returning. I know that I have a lot to figure out but my uncle will help me, I hope.

Uncles house is only a two mile walk from my parents and I am lost in thought as I make my way there. Outside his house I watch two little children laughing and playing in the street. The neighborhood is safe, so I am not surprised to see them there.

As I am rounding the corner to head up Uncle's drive, I hear someone zooming down the road. When I look to see who it might be on a private street, I realize it is my father and he doesn't see the children in the street.

Without a thought, I rush at the kids and knock them out of the way just as my father's car slams into me and the world goes black.
