Chapter 22

Mr. Blackbourne, Luke, and I are out for a jog in the misty Seattle afternoon when the screeching of tires draws our attention. The three of us watch in horror as someone comes racing up the private street toward a few kids playing in the road.

Before we can react, a man rushes at the kids and pushes them out of the way, causing the car to slam into him instead. Without stopping the car, the person driving reverses and drives away quickly.

Mr. Blackbourne is already paging the Doc as we run up to the guy who got hit. An older man, in his forties, comes rushing down the street from a few houses down, yelling.

"Vic! Please, no," he sobs, dropping to his knees in front of the guy on the ground.

"We have a friend who is a doctor he is coming," I assure him, knowing his injuries are fatal just by looking at him. "Can we bring him into your house to get looked at? Do you know him?"

"He's my nephew, Victor is his name. He is more like a son to me than anything, please save him," he whispers, brushing the hair out of Victor's eyes.

Glancing at Mr. Blackbourne, I see that look in his eyes that I know I have on my own. I look back to Victor's uncle and nod. "We will save him," I assure him.

When we have Victor back at his uncle's house, it isn't more than a moment before the doc is rushing in. He comes to the same conclusion I did. The injuries are fatal.

"How do we do this with his uncle right here?" Luke whispers as Nathan tries to keep his uncle calm.

"I had a thought," Mr. Blackbourne speaks up as we all try to come up with a way to work this out. "His uncle seems like a nice man. He obviously care for his nephew very much. Why don't we explain it to him?"

Glances are exchanged and silent words spoken. We have spent years learning to read people and we all agree this uncle is a good person. He is trustworthy.

"Mister...?" Mr. Blackbourne allows his words to trail off, keeping his formality even at a time like this.

"Uncle, just call me uncle," the man shakes his head, holding Victor's hand and mumbling to him that he is going to be alright.

"Well, Uncle," the word sounding foreign from Mr. Blackbourne. "We need to talk about how we can save your nephew."

An hour later, Uncle was watching over his nephew while his injuries healed miraculously. He was amazed that us boys had been telling the truth and I couldn't blame him for thinking we were off our rockers.

"Hey guys," Luke whispered as wesat around waiting for Victor to wake up. "Does this mean Victor is my centennialpresent?"H6ן$
