Princess Sofia was a member of the Buttercup troop with her friends, and she'd been a Buttercup since before she was a princess. The troop used to be for all girls until the castle steward, Baileywick, became a Buttercup troop leader. There had been a few changes to the Buttercup troop, and there were more changes coming the Buttercups' way.

Sofia was with her village friends at the castle, and they were looking at some old pictures of them on past Buttercup adventures.

"Wow, I can't wait until we go to Swamp Rock Hill next week," Jade said happily.

"Me too," Ruby Hanshaw added.

Just then, Baileywick came in and said, "Princess Sofia, you have a visitor."

Sofia's best friend, Prince Hugo, came in. "Hey, Sofia," he smiled.

"Hey, Hugo," Sofia smiled back.

Jade's and Ruby's smiles dropped as they saw Hugo—they were usually jealous of Hugo because he was really close to Sofia, and Hugo knew he needed to watch his back with them because they did bad things to him in the past due to their jealousy.

"What's going on?" Hugo asked.

"We were just looking at some old Buttercup pictures," Meg replied.

"Buttercup?" Hugo asked. He didn't really know much about the Buttercup troop.

"It's a girl-scout troop—well, Baileywick is a troop leader," Sofia explained. "I've been a Buttercup since before I was a princess."

"That sounds interesting," Hugo said.

"Yeah, and we've gone on hikes together," Peg told him. Now Hugo knew why Sofia liked hiking so much.

"As a matter of fact, the Buttercups are going a hike to Swamp Rock Hill next week," Sofia said.

"A swamp?" Hugo asked. He didn't really like swamps very much.

"You know, champ, maybe you should go on the hike with Sofia and the Buttercups," Hugo's father, King Garrick, suggested.

But Hugo wasn't so sure if he wanted to go to Swamp Rock Hill—and Ruby and Jade didn't like the sound of that.

"I really don't know about this hike, Dad," Hugo frowned. "Remember when we went on that hike to Smelly Swamp in Albuquerque?"

Garrick understood what his son meant. "Ah, yes, I remember," he said.

"What happened?" Meg asked.

"I fell in the swamp, and I was so dirty and stinky that I had to take four baths to get clean when we got home—and it took a lot of soap to scrub the mud out of my ears," Hugo recalled.

Ruby and Jade were happy that Hugo might not be going on the hike because of a bad experience with a swamp in his own kingdom.

"I'm sure Swamp Rock Hill isn't as bad as the stinky one in Albuquerque," Sofia assured Hugo. "I can help you not fall in."

Hugo thought about it, and he knew he could trust Sofia.

"Well, okay," Hugo smiled. "I guess I can go."

"All right, when we get home, I'll help you pack your camping gear," Garrick smiled.

Jade and Ruby's smiles dropped—they knew they had to make this hike go bad for Hugo next week.

For the whole week, Garrick helped Hugo pack his camping gear, and his older brother, Axel, helped a little, too.

"Okay, that's everything," Hugo said.

"Yeah, and you just need to find some good clothes for the outdoors," Axel reminded him.

"And this," Garrick added, carrying another bag.

Hugo saw that there were blankets in the bag.

"What do I need these for, Dad?" Hugo asked. "I have a sleeping bag in my backpack."

"You'll never know if you need these blankets," Garrick told him.
